Running Windows applications like Gatekeeper is painfully slow on a Mac. The Farmplan phone support team just don't want to know!

There’s a message in there somewhere. The only thing we do on a windows machine, which I hate and Mrs F won’t touch, is gatekeeper. The kids all run windows on economic grounds but even that is a bit dubious from my point of view. The only reason we replaced our 10 year old Mac was because apple stopped upgrading it and the internet stopped working. The younger generation get about 5 years from a windows machine.

Apple never announce a new Mac until it hits the shops, so I bought mine 2 weeks before the newer uprated model came out which was annoying. Currently waiting for a new 2020 model to come out so I can replace this one. It's a fully tax deductible business cost, which makes it a little less painful.

Email this morning, new iMacs are available to order from today. But the sharp ******** have made it so the optional memory upgrades are more expensive than the computer itself 🙄

Get the 27" with basic 8GB memory and upgrade it yourself. It is so simple a child could do it in seconds. I think they price the 27" that way to disincentive people from making them open a standard computer's box and doing it before dispatch. Probably more bother than it's worth from their perspective unless the customer pays through the nose for it. An EXTRA 64GB of ddr4 2666mhz memory should not cost more than £240 inclusive of VAT compared to Apple charging £1000 for 64GB in total, installed.

However, I would certainly go for the mid tier model and double the SSD storage to 1GB for £200. Or even to 2TB for £600 extra if you feel the need, because expanding this internally in future is a big job. Having said that, you can use external hard drives and/or SSD drives coupled to either the Thunderbolt [USB C] [ideal for M.2 or SATA SSD's] or USB 3 [ideal for conventional hard drives.
