what riles me is the following

Tractor and trailer weights are now up to 31t.

Lad can be 16 yrs old and drive at that weight with very little training, and can work as many hrs as he can

8 wheeler lorry gross weight 32t
Driver has to be over 21, passed a medical, a theory test, a practical test, and then complete driver cpc training. He is governed to the hours he can work by tachograph laws, and heaven forbid anything happens, he will have the police and vosa to answer to.

Doesn't really make sense does it?????
It's 18 now

there has been a road accident up here with a Claas Lexion and a white van couple of days ago, both the van and the Class combine will be written off, the combine was moving from field to field on the road at the time, the combine is a right mess, but at least both drivers were ok

White van and particularly dpd speed is a problem in my area, they dont just drive fast they are mental, fatality's are on the cards id say.

I think we maybe should have MOT's for those that want to travel at 50kph plus and pull heavy trailers etc - I have no objection to anything that makes the roads my family travel on being safer and I don't see how as an industry we can be immune to road safety that everyone else has to comply with

However I also agree that a line needs to be drawn and MOT's etc would be extra OTT and unnecessary red tape for some farms that never find themselves on roads like the a38 at speed with heavy loads etc

My view is if a tractor is sticking to current speed limits (20mph ?) and weights then leave as is but bring in a MOT that allows older (21 plus ?) licensed drivers with abs / air braked suitable machines to legally go faster and carry the weights that many already do

I help out a friend on his farm at harvest. Running 2 fast tracs. Brand new one and a 3 yr old one. Both do 69kmh coupled to 16t trailers. I've carted since before I passed my test age 14. The fast tracs are a different animal all together. They aren't tractors in the conventional sense any longer. They are off road lorries. Had an idiot pull out on me and I slammed the brakes on with full load. Stopped so fast I slid forward off the seat. Amazing breaking. These are the types of tractors that should be age restricted and be mot'd. A lorry weighing in the same as a fully loaded tractor wouldn't do the same speed on the roads we do pulling grain.

don't they need some authorisation from the police for moving over width kit on the road and a copy kept with the machine
