Oil seed rape seed

You'd all be still growing Jet Neuf if that was the case, it does cost an obscene amount to get a new variety to market, yes there is profit margin also in there.

C B

But don't we pay a royalty for that? Are you saying that royalty payments nowhere near cover the costs of bringing something to market? Is it the same for cereals which seem to have more clarity between cost of production and seed costs? Does the buyer of new seed subsidise the buyer who farm saves and pays a royalty?

How would Jet Neuf yield today I wonder?

As hinted about in previous posts, only bother saving conventional variety seed. If you trying using hybrid seed, you will get a mix of plants with good and bad traits. On balance you new mixed crop may be OK, but its difficult to be sure and you may end up with more work having to manage the extremes (ie. taller/weaker plant, more disease susceptible plants, uneven ripeness etc...)

I keep mine for a couple of years. Test the germination to be sure. Count out 100 seeds and put them on wet kitchen paper in a cupboard for a week.

Volunteer oilseed rape lasts for years in the soil - why shouldn't it last a couple of years in a dry shed if kept properly?
I agree.ive planted over yeared barley and wheat that has been deter treated and it grew aswell as new seed despite being told by agronomist it will be dead and never grow.just another scare tactic by seed sellers.

Old seed doesn't always grow if it isn't in good condition. Test it and you will find out. I kept tiny poor quality yet certified C2 seed bought in 2012 but not sown that year. The germination dropped to 72% 12 months later but having adjusted the seed rate accordingly, it grew well.

is it not down to the land being OSR sick? too much in too close rotation, virgin OSR land still blows tight rotation land out of the water no matter what variety it is?
All our rape looks well this year but a third is on land that has not grown it for over 20 years, the other two thirds 1 in 3 rotation, so looking forward to the result.

I bet if planted at decent spacings and with modern fungicides it would yield really well. However it might not go down so well in the crush. Breeding for lower acids etc has bred out a lot of the bushy vigour. In the same way that breeding wheat for 90cm straw has for that crop.
