You're right that they are all black birds, all corvids.

Rooks look as though they wear baggy trousers, and flocks of them eat leatherjackets out of your reseeds (and glean grain); crows will be scoffing the ewe who's stuck on her back and can't do much about it; jackdaws are the pretty little ones that block your chimney with their nests.

Jays and magpies are more easily distinguished.

September’s the harvest month.
Combining’s one of them jobs where you get tired just sitting on your arse.
Fed a thousand crows and still did 3t per acre.
(My good old neighbour’s usual sayings.)
