My old man lived for the next project. Even at 84 he said I can’t go now, I still have so many things I want to do. I think that’s what kept him going. He said just keep on going. Keep on carrying on. And I think he was right. He generally was right actually, especially about the Polish round baler. Don’t buy it he said. How right he was. We should have listened.

Mate of mine at school retired from the police at 50 now lives in france. Great lad but not the brightest yet retired along time before me......so who really was the brightest😂

There is a chap in our village with a holiday home who retired from the police at 50. He said he joined up just for the early retirement. Ffs, who the hell thinks about retirement at 18!?. Well yea, a policeman 🤪

Old farmers. They loved a good bonfire. No carbon sequestration rubbish. Keep the job tidy. Asbestos was still a wonder product . Why is the angle grinder caked in white dust? He’s been cutting an asbestos sheet or down spout to size. Ploughing with semi digger at least. None of this 8” nonsense. Wildlife? Well that’s what the rifle is for. Well there’s foxy in the grass. Bullet from the bedroom window. We wouldn’t be here today without them.

I can’t see your age?
I’ve just put in an entry for the RAC rally again but there is a guy called Bob Bean, whose been doing it forever, still competing, and at a reasonable pace. He’s 84👍
Knock 20 years off! Replacement titanium knee & dodgy hips but big grin still.....All those hundreds of tons of building materials have taken their toll

Sounds like his memory has gone though 😂

Sadly he married a young model of 20 and is no longer with us.

The suspicion is that she drugged him with metamphetimes (sp?) but there may be other factors at play ....

I have a repeat prescription for codeine. I have a couple of nights a week every so often when they are needed. I'm concerned about adiction but as I'm not really an addictive sort I'll just carry on regardless! The 'don't move' is v difficult.

I suppose I am now one of those old folks and am just going through the transition from being a key player to the OJB. (Odd Job Boy)

My Father was content to let me run the business when I had finished doing many other different jobs while he attended markets. He dug up thistles with his Spud and became the OJB and would do those "just" jobs such as driving half way across the country to get spare parts. He carried on doing this until his 90's but the shooting season took priority.

I have been very lucky having spent a lot of time away from the farm and also travelled and worked across a good part of the world. I have a great wife who I have known since we went to kindergarten together (although only got together after she finished Uni and qualified as a teacher).
I have always tried to keep going forward and still have many ideas that I would like to progress as long as my Son agrees with me.
The single greatest issue I feel for many of my generation has been that over the last 25 years we have not been able to make sufficient profits to have had the luxury of doing anything else but work, especially in the livestock sector.

Frustratingly I believe we are about to enter an era of greater profits, but I am not sure there is the skilled labour force left on livestock farms to allow for us old ones to completely step back and I look forward to an educational role now. That is if anyone wants the job!

Like my younger brother who did his 22 yrs in the army, retired to Bulgaria. I think he had lots of years still in him and must get pretty bored. I’m 60 next birthday . Is that in the old or young bracket?
still play footy on Wednesday nights with guys from 50 to 73, who still run around and are very competitive .
farm wise the two children both have good ag based careers, but I’m not burning any bridges so will manage things by doing as much as I can/ want to do and use contractors or grow crops that others harvest and don’t keep any livestock.
sometimes the thought of completely retiring appeals, with thoughts of living in a nice town where I can stroll for a paper then enjoy a lunchtime pint or two, but I think I’d soon get bored or become an over weight alcoholic.
