doors, wait until you are told you have toMum used to milk with those melotte buckets that used to hang on the cow
Wacky idea but she said it was easy once you got the hang of it. Next step was jars and pipeline out of an abreast in the 70's milking 4 with 8 standings. Tank went in in 76 and we put greedy boards on about 4 years ago for EOD collections
Parlour been adjusted over the years its now a 6 6 and back in the summer we knocked out a wall to help cow flow and dug out the floor so that we created a step for the cows to stand on (helps the back) also put stable matting on the steps.
Cows are chained by the neck and happily back of standings
Fed cake With a bucket out of a bin in end of shed
Wouldn't be cost effective to have flattened and put new parlour in
Anyone know do I have to put doors on or not (I don't want too)

My thoughts exactlydoors, wait until you are told you have to
I wish everyone thought like you, got told by someone 'it's hard enough to make money without people like you coming in and watering our price down' wasnt exactly the encouraging words I needed at the time! Jokes on them thoughIt must give some young lads, with the dream, encouragement, to see these 'cheap' but very simple and effective parlours on here. They do not need a modern flash, expensive parlour to start up, which are the 'ones' usually pictured.
In doing our costings/budgets for ours, one of the 'best' was 20/30 good cows, simple bail, and partime work for son, reliefing elsewhere, a few days a week, we couldn't find a sensible bail, that's why the abreast went in, (£ 100) with pump, clusters, vacuum pump, and s/s pipes. Chap had finished milking 4 yrs, as last cow walked out, engine off. 4 years of milk residue took a bit of cleaning out.
It would be quite possible for a keen person, to start a small dairy, on a few acres, buying/bringing fodder from 'elsewhere', to start, on a very easily situated site, ie tanker passes by ! We need new young people coming into milking, just hope this gives encouragement, or a springboard to a bigger farm, at least he wouldn't be starting from zero.
If you get told you need doors, dig your toes in and ask them to show you regulations which say you must.My thoughts exactly
Got red tractor soon so won't be long to find out
Been OK so farMight want doors in winter have to see what the new red tractor rules are going to be on tethering.
bank manager told me it was impossible to start again, wouldn't get a contract, and he wouldn't lend me money, i didn't have any intention of asking for any, it had to stand on it's own. He must have thought about it, as he rung up month later, asking if i had thought any more about it, i took the greatest of pleasure in telling him, the milk tanker collected yesterday, for the first time, 5 milkings, 375 litres ! there was a moment of silence, then he said, very nicely, he had to come and see it, he did, on his school run, and was impressed. But money wise, it was very tight, F&M shut down everything, we did get 6 cows in, after dark, the rest were beefers, but it was then onwards and upwards.I wish everyone thought like you, got told by someone 'it's hard enough to make money without people like you coming in and watering our price down' wasnt exactly the encouraging words I needed at the time! Same set up we haveThere is a herd of about 40-50 cows in the next village cubicle housed fed round bales in ring feeders but milked in an old pipe line shippon. Can't be doing them too much harm as last time I drove past they had a brand new Ndw Holland loader tractor in the yard.
Many years ago bro and I bought a second hand then 5/10 herringbone which we installed ourselves while still milking 55 cows in byre basic parlour with cake feeders upped to 70 cows about an hour and a half. It was brilliant one person milking easyView attachment 947146View attachment 947148These are some of the original ones, still have the old airline in, getting some holes filled in with concrete and set up as pens for sheep and lambs
