Older tractor registration

I've just had our late Dad's 1970 Ford 3000 restored and would like to make her legal on the public highway. I know the original registration and she has been insured under that every year from new. However she's not been taxed in my lifetime.
The impression I get from talking to people is that the DVLA will as a result have no record of her and I will have to re register? If so, is there any likelihood of getting the original reg no, or will they only give me a generic age related one?

Ha, DVLA can be very hard to deal with regarding original registrations, I tried (in vain so far) to get my grand father's Fergie registered (it originally was) despite having tax discs going back to 1948, records of the registration showing my grand father had said tractor they still would not issue a reg doc, I even had pictures showing the reg from very early 1950 with my gramp sat on it and me on his knee. I even have my grandfathers old purchase book showing when it was bought and who from and for how much.
They stated that there was no paperwork that could prove the registration was linked to the chassis number/engine number. I have all but given up but will be going through the office to see if I can find the old card log book.
It is a basic case of "computer says no"

Ring Jim Wilkie from the NVTEC on 01454 313305 and he will be able to guide you through the process, it may be that you application may need to be approved by an appropriate club / association.

This doesn't always work, I had mine done by the Fergie Club and still no joy.

I restored a super dexta about 6 years ago.had it from new,or my dad did and we had the brown log book and original number.to get it re registered i had to join a vintage tractor club to get a letter authenticating the tractor and then take pictures of all serial numbers on the tractor and send this with a copy of the original log book to swansea and eventually got a new log book with the original number

Unfortunately I have no documents relating to the tractor barring insurance receipts. We renovated the farmhouse a few years back and I went through every bag of old paperwork in the attic looking for log book or original invoice, but nothing before 1975. My parents married mid 70s, and I'm guessing the business was changed and the older documents destroyed during the clear out when Nain moved out. I've even talked to the chap who holds much of supplying dealer Reginald Tildesley's archive. But apparently most of the records from their Welshpool depot were destroyed. Not the end of the world if it does have to get a new number.

The DVLA vehicle enquiry site will reply 'details cannot be found' if the vehicle hasn't been taxed since 1998.
But there is a good chance this 1970 tractor will be on their computer as IIRC the computer database was set up in 1970's?
It's not all loss if it isn't on the database, as you can still search for the ledger entry or record card at your local records office where vehicles were recorded prior to DVLA.
