He hasnt been too successful in harvesting it in previous years though.
I've know of more than a few fields round here that still have ordinary spring barley to cut.
Weather gave up seriously on last day of September and there has been hardly any chance since, especially if ground is soft.

It must have been late 1970s - early 1980s I saw stooked oats still out above Dufftown with the snow on it. Most of that would have been got in after drying sheaves of oats by hanging them on the wire fences. But I never saw barley still to cut, though don't disbelieve it. Makes me smile when I read about the despair of southerners because their hay got a shower of rain!

Anyway I'm in the Whisky county, not that its any better!!

In Ollys case, trying to double crop, I'd think that either crimp or wrap it up for silage would be the way to go, far better chance of getting it in better order.
See them trying double crops in the USA on Youtube, but their season is so much drier than here.
Would break me taking that nice combine he has out to get mucky in December.

Very frosty here one February when there was a call for a dealer to a round baler problem. He thought ok to fix it by May but the farmer was trying to bale his straw that day as the frost had finally let him on to the fields

Christmas Eve, here in south lakes 2 farms cut n baled grass more so to clear the fields of dead dying fodder, all low lying ground, mower looked like a snow plough! Fields all recovered, haven’t a clue how the forage turned out!

Theres a lad down the road from me plants spring wheat/ barley/beans in june then combines from november onwards. Seen him combining wheat on xmas day. Regular occurance.

It was about this time last year a non farming friend of mine sent me a photo of two Lexions near where he lives depressingly trudging their way through a grey mat of spring barley.
He asked me: "Is this normal?"
Me: "Erm, well not really"
A few minutes later he sent a message telling me they had packed in combining as it was snowing!
This farm is 900ft above sea level so I suppose you reap what you sow...late in this case!

Agree, but interesting none the less. Did he say no inputs other that the seed? Wonder how much was lost on the ground ?
Not knocking him at all, good on him for trying it, and interesting too. Need the weather and the location to make it work.

In 68/69 we were baling the straw from a crop the following february, had the first dry spell and weredesperate for the straw. It was an awful job to get up the pick up, just rolled along in front

From what I have seen in his videos the barley was down as a cover crop with home saved untreated seed. No inputs so anything harvested was just a bonus. In previous attempts he thought the cover crop had benefitted the following crop.
