Anyone tried to go 'off grid' yest?

Batteries are rumoured to be improving.

We have solar on the sheds and I'd love to be able to store the energy for off peak but haven't heard of anything good enough yet.

Anyone any experience?

Batteries are the big question and sadly nobody really has an idea how long they will last, conventional batteries will not appreciate total discharge.
I note from your other post that you are hoping to go off grid, however you must remember that the bulk of the power is produced in the summer, and for most people the bulk of use is in the winter. Batteries are not good for long storage since you will need so many and the cost so high

Due to logistics we use more in the summer, but I understand re the winter hours being unproductive. Fingers crossed there's some developments.
Thanks for the reply.

I’m sure it’s not far off regarding the batteries. I am planning a small scale storage set up for the house. Plan is to store power when it’s at a low tariff over night, 5p per kw and use it throughout the day. The kit is available as a complete package, but not that cost effective, maybe if electric goes up again it would be. My plan is batteries, 8kw storage, charge management and inverter . Not sure how to connect everything together just yet . But will get a spark in to sort it. If I can get pay back over 2 years I will do it.

batteries, solar and cheap night rate electric is certainly the way to go.
Then you will have to find a way of only putting enough in at night to allow for next days top up.
Yesterday my solar installs averaged 0.1 KwH / per kWh installed array. Today looks an awful lot better thankfully

I should get just over 2kw an hour, so over my 4 hours cheap rate be able to store 8kw. Well that’s my thinking anyway. I have really no idea , just at planning and info gathering stage. I know I could get one all in for £4000. My man maths says a daily saving of £1.60, 8kw at 20p less than standard tariff , 5p cheap 25p normal . That gives me a saving of £584 a year. I ideally want to pay £1200 for a set up. 2 years pay back. So will be looking at individual components and a day for a spark?

It’s the battery cost that’s holding me back at the moment, £700 per KW for a build up battery kit. I’m now looking at individual batteries and build my own battery pack, maybe start small and add when the savings come in? It’s all possible, but needs to be at the right price.

Your idea is pretty much what I'm wanting to do, only we'd be topping up from the solar. Most agri use is summer, it would only be domestic in winter.

I'm hearing there's big developments in the near future. We'll see.

Hopefully, it’s battery price that’s holding me back. I’m sure there will be batteries at the right price soon. Been spending too much time on YouTube!

Not something I've come across, where could I find out more?
Its just standard process engineering but areas to look at are waste heat recovery using thermal oil, which normally gets converted into electric using conventional steam or thermal oil. For direct applications of thermal oil the commercial bakery business is way ahead with thermal oil cookers and ovens. As for Solar the Germans have high temperature solar thermal panels capable of using thermal oil. As for sources of insulated thermal oil stores the Asphalt industry is a ready made source using standard container sizes. All containers are normally dual heating with both thermal oil pipes and electrical resistance. So any excess wind or solar can charge up the thermal oil store.
