Utter rubbish, tourism lives on the back of farming, like tics on a ewe. I suggest you research the number of full time permanent jobs in each industry-and don't forget the support industries like food processing & manufacturing, the supply industry etc. I also suggest that the farming value of the westcountry is a very large "fraction" of the GVA figure you quote.

So why was there such an uproar from the tourist industry when the countryside went into lockdown during FMD?

No one visits the westcountry to admire the scenic sink estates of Plymouth, Exeter or St Austell.

No farming = no tourism
Rubbish .
Tourism is not dependant on Ag.and with regards to that example..... people were discouraged (probably quite rightly) also perhaps a bit afraid ......to come to the countryside during the f&m outbreak , Tourism suffered because of that obviously, the Moors , beaches , beautiful countryside was still there ...

No you misunderstand, they would not be interested in coming if there was no countryside.
when I am touring Asia the travel agents all say fly round the country all our Customers do, it is far more comfortable and cheaper. I say no I want to see the real country, not the plastic all inclusive resorts.
people come to the UK for many reasons, but they dont go to the west country for the sand and cheap booze, they go to see that beautiful lush patchwork of fields and woods , hill and moor that has been created by generations of farmers

Cornish economy:

Page 4: GVA of farming £165m. GVA of food and drink processing £239m. GVA of Hotels and Catering £445m. So just the hospitality trade alone outweighs farming and food processing by itself. Thats without all the other service industries that rely on tourist footfall and money. The service sector accounts for £1.5bn of GVA in Cornwall, I guess all that money comes from farmers......
