The driver of a car which was being tracked by members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was arrested after a failed attempt to hide in a local farmyard in Co. Tyrone.

The incident occurred on Saturday (March 27) when the driver in question attempted to evade police after being stopped.

According to PSNI officers based in Mid Ulster, a dramatic sequence of events then unfolded:

During a routine stop of a car near the Ballygawley roundabout the driver of the car that had been stopped attempted to run over one of our officers when he approached the car.

“Car then made off up the A4 towards Dungannon. The helicopter wasn’t long getting overhead and was able to pick up the vehicle heading towards Moygashel.

“Unaware his every move was being tracked from above, he thought the cops were long gone and decided to hide up in a farmyard that he had no right to be in.

“By this stage the eye in the sky had guided all crews into position, so you can image the surprise on his face when we all moved in and he realised he was surrounded,” the PSNI statement said.

He rammed two police cars trying to escape but was promptly extracted from his vehicle, cuffed and restrained.

“Follow up searches have uncovered a large quantity of suspected Class A drugs. Meanwhile he’s currently in the cells facing a significant list of offences,” the PSNI statement concluded.

In an update yesterday (Monday, March 29), the PSNI said: “The driver was held in custody and charged to court this morning.

“The judge has remanded him and he is now in HMP Maghaberry awaiting trial.”
