Orf

Never had it before. Was probably going to wean my best group of lambs. 300 lambs in the group. Nice big females to select from. Then about 10 days ago I noticed one or two. Since got them in to worm/wean. About 60 in the mob now. Some real bad swollen faces. Lambs have gone backwards 10 fold. I weaned them and split them up ones with and without. To try snd stop it. Now I hate going to check on them as look ugly as sin. Advised to let it blow over. Have put salt licks out. Any other advice?

Too late now, but I don't think I would be worming lambs that had orf for fear of spreading via the gun and getting it myself.
Phone Starlyne Feeds for their mineral powder with extra zinc (y) .

Salt is the main ingredient in them anyway.

but very palatable.....salt licks no good if they won't lick them.....also tubby's contain sulphur which is good at drying it up

IMO orf is a sign of something else that is lowering the immune system....in my case it was haemonchus.....once i got them under control my orf outbreaks stopped

Worm any lambs showing orf last. Wear gloves when handling any of the lambs.

Keep a look out for secondary infections in the pustules. They can really knock a lamb. Oxytet by injection works here, but you will know the right sort for your flock at the moment. We now give a NSAID to those with big swellings, too. Some will probably need oxytet spray topically. Others just warm salt water bathed using a lint pad.

That’s really strange. Our fec results have just come back with haemonchus. Nothing major but a count of 600epg

Obviously there's a lot more awareness now of wormer resistance etc but 25 years ago we discovered, by chance, that Dectomax dries up orf. Jagged a batch of ram lambs one day and one had a bit of orf on his lips, didn't have any Orfoids which was the weapon of choice at the time so let him back out for the weekend. When we got them back in on the Monday there was hardly any sign of the orf.

Found DB buckets very good against orf and cocci. Also, if you have creeping thistles in the field they are more prone to orf.
