The beet with the prize card came 10m ish from where the weedy photo was taken and majority of beet in the field was that size.
yore being conservative with 8t on a 12 tonner but it dosnt look like a 23t crop somhow!

That picture was from a worse part of the field on the headland but was fathen all over but dont think it had much of a effect on yield, the 20%+ of seed which didn’t germinate would have had far more impact.

Appreciate the replies @Scholsey @MartinM - we don’t have troughs only open passage so we find the beet gets nuzzled out and rolls around the yard if whole or poorly chopped. Cows also pick up the pieces and drop it under their feet - we are on floodwash so the bits then get washed out and block the grids 🙈
Do we need to give them longer to acclimatise and the problems will ease?
fedder wagon is new Keenan tub with chopping plates so I’m surprised the chop hasn’t been better - I am not operating it now and rarely on site so can’t comment on whether it just needs longer or whether beet goes in first to give as much time as possible.
Thanks
They will take 3 weeks to get used to whole beets
First few days you will need to drive over a few or smash or slice them with a spade to expose the flesh

How did you cope with the bird's? First time we grew it wasn't too bad, second time they took about a third, third time was over half and we ended up tilling oats in the bare patch!

We do have 1000 odd acres of trees opposite us tho? Rooks are very clever, they went down the rows pecking up the seedlings.

Great organic crop otherwise, give it pleanty of sh!t at hoe it a few times.

Do you not find any soil on the beet mixes with the forages and make them less palatable?

We bought in supposedly cleaned beet from Suffolk and some of that was bad and just put it on top of the mix once I mixed my forages, must admit this is second year we’ve grown it ourselves and it’s been clean both times but lifted it first week of November both times and tipped it in a shed, think keeping it dry is key as any soil turns to dust and falls off in the beet bucket.
I know Field Options at Presteigne supply.
Mine has been Geronimo from FO.

After buying a lorry load from @robot Jerseys I'm thinking I'll take the plunge and grow so organic fodder beet this year.

Cows loved it but the transport killed buying to much from afar £££

Planting tips needed please! When the best time, how much sh!t what shouldn't be done!

Thanks
