If you haven’t got irrigation so limited appeal to potato/veg growers what crops are any good on black land? Sugar beet and wheat on their own aren’t enough really. Residuals don’t work very well so BG an increasing problem. Any thoughts? Letting for maize or turf is not appealing/appropriate for several reasons. Interested in others views.

Don't know about black land. How about linseed or sunflowers or lupins?
Linseed is ok IF you get good weed control. I suspect that would be an issue with the other crops you mention. Black land grows weeds for fun.

Organic soil. As in the proper meaning of the word, made of carbon. Full of organic matter.

Luckily we don’t have a bg problem (at the moment!) generally we either grow spring barley on the bits that won’t travel unless it’s been dry for 3 weeks. The firmer ground is pretty much permanent winter barley at the moment but we have had beet, spuds, carrots, wheat etc on it. But as you say weed control can be a major issue if not timed spot on!
How do you keep the barley upright?! Next to no N? I’m always amazed @Sonoftheheir manages.

80-100 units and a good pgr on the spring barley usually but it was leaning quite a bit last time I looked. Not been since all this rain though

We don’t get around to drilling barley till end Oct, drill at 130kg/ha. Only one pass of N at 120kg/ha of product. Then plenty of PGR. Terpal is your friend. Still goes down in places most years

Only grow feed barley now, got sh!t on to many times with the malting job!
Been cutting the winter barley of the moss today.
Was looking pretty promising but a drainage issue that needs looking at on one side of the field really knocked it the average! Did 3.1t/ac in the end which isn’t to bad I suppose but at least 1/2t down on a normal year. Also it’s a new variety I’ve not grown before so could be a factor as well but it does look like there’s potential.
Fortunately not to much of this today either
