My plan is get the crop in the ground as cheaply as possible and. Do nothing to it until I know there’s a viable crop,

Any disaster will be a cheap one then
I’m tempted to put a seeder on the top down and Chuck a bit of seed on while cultivating. If it grows that’s great if not it’s worked ready for drilling with something else.
but then think can I really be bothered.

Cultivator and combi drill here

cos that’s what we got

on the acres we grow it’s not worth the expense of putting seeder on cultivator

Refer to my previous post in this thread plus on others.
What you are advocating is a shot in the dark. At least try something that Might work. Even a trial area! A late 70's and 80's disciple. We gave everything a try!
Where did you think the original ww ten tonne club came from. Some data and some guess work. Cleanacres in the 70's had Avalon trial a 6.3 t/ACRE.
Some of us old guys aint so stupid. Had my first 5t/ha OSR crop in 1986. Change of varieties, single lows, double lows. Eventually got 8t/ha in Lincs farm average 6t/ha in mid noughties. Lots of others in that area with similar yield meter results but maybe not the farm averages. Up here if you don't average 5t/ha you have your finger in the wrong orifice. Anyone like to bet on a 15 year average of at least that.

What about sowing FSS at a high rate straight after harvest, chuck some N on see what's there in October, if it's knackered drill something else, look again at Christmas and if it's still viable but big and angry looking graze it with sheep that should them take care of any larvae and give you a clean crop which hopefully won't need to many inputs throught the spring.🤷

Must say I have a field of Campus and one of Extar in. There doesn't look much between them and I quite like the fact that the campus was later flowering, if I grow OSR this year, might be potatoes, I will be tempted to home save some campus.

I wish we could, but not so easy on blackgrass land where by Christmas it would have needed two herbicides. Try grazing sheep on Denchworth clay, even the local Fallow deer and rabbits go on vacation over winter. Also have had some good looking OSR post Christmas to see it eaten from within in February. It's become a 'wishing crop'.
