OSR fungicide

With November 2021 OSR worth £410/t+bonuses what are peoples thoughts on fungicides? A lot of OSR round here is struggling with CSFB and sharp frosts every night.

It's a difficult one. As said there are plenty of poor crops out there so I don't see a bumper year. That should keep the price fairly robust (don't quote me) so this year's crop is worth investing in. That said the likely return is potentially small given the disease pressure, but again at those prices the yield response you need to pay for a fungicide is unmeasurable

This. It's a salesman's wet dream because yield responses don't need to be big to cover input costs. I genuinely can't remember what the NIAB TAG data was on OSR yield responses were in the absence of disease pressure, so if the OP is a member, it would be worth researching. Or ring their local NIAB TAG agronomist.

My initial thought was as to why when we see higher prices, do we think of more expensive ways of growing it?!

Anybody appplied Lebosol-RapsMix SC (B,Mo,Mn) @ early flowering? Usually applied it preflowering but haven’t been through the crop to apply it. It does leave a white residue on the leaves in a dry time, label says timing up to full flowering. Just gave it straight Boron at the start of stem extension.

Stem extending is when boron deficiency most likely to show up but you've treated then anyway. Same applies for other trace elements so not sure of the benefit to be got now. (Molybdenum??!!!!)

I was planning 1/2 litre Tebuconazole and 1/2 litre Amistar but probably won't bother.
The forecast is dry and we are getting so few spray days that something else will need doing.
I can always use up the chemicals as an earwash

Just been prescribed filan(boscalid) @ .4 which works out at £27/ha plus using some prothioconazole @.4 which we have in store. Sounds ridiculous to me. anyone else spend so much. I know I won’t be.

That is a very 'robust' mix.

What would you be happy to pay for 3 weeks protections against sclerotinia (plus any other diseases lurking in your crop e.g. light leaf spot)?

What is your crop's yield potential like (if that's ever possible to gauge in OSR)? What is the variety? What has your fungicide program been this spring?

In my patch the stars are aligning for possible sclerotinia infection periods from end of this week onwards so most crops (but not all) will receive their one and only flowering fungicide before Saturday.... but won't be spending £40/ha+ that's for sure.

I think scalerotina sprays one has to look at it as an insurance. I insure things I cant afford to lose.
Or never insure it and let the spray savings pay for the losses one may incur from that one bad scalerotina year 1 year in 7

Just looking on AHDB web site and a single application of 50% prothioconazole is as good as 50% of any other product. Might go at 75% as looks like a showery couple of weeks. Crops do look good, only thing it’s had is Astro kerb and a bit of teb and growth reg.

Plus the £13/ha of prothio. As opposed to just £15 of prothio which would do the job
How far through flowering are your crops and how many weeks would you guesstimate flowering will last for?

Just playing devils advocate....

Taken from AHDB website.

"...Fungicides are only effective against sclerotinia when applied as a protectant before infection occurs. It should be noted that the performance of products is dependent on when infection conditions occur after application. Low doses can appear effective when infection occurs only once within days of application.
In high risk years, eg where weather favourable for infection occurs regularly throughout flowering, low doses will not provide adequate persistence. Persistence of full dose fungicides after application is approximately three weeks, therefore robust doses are recommended..."

Swap the boscalid for some azoxystrobin (to partner the prothio), would be a reasonably robust option, and less expensive than the boscalid.
