osr sowing survival strategy

Ah the urban fringe. Don't worry - you'll be farming houses at some point and that's worth it in the long run.

I can see why they might pop round - "statutory duty" blah blah "can't say who" blah blah. But a quick copy of the rules and they will leave. Digestate perfectly fine applied and not incorporated on a growing crop.

Digestate on emerged osr or ahead of the subdoiler is one of the best ways of keeping the insects away based on anecdotal evidence here in the land of unpleasant smells.

Have anecdotal evidence that OSR sprayed with Breakthru along with pre-em for slug control has an effect on CSFB. They arrive have a nibble then depart.
It would seem the soil conditions that Slugs and to a certain extent Leather Jackets don't like is affecting them. Nowhere to settle so move on.
Not sure if it controls the nematodes after hatching but very little stem damage if at all. Clients in Lincs reporting good yields.

Which critters are you referring to? Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle?

You can't prevent them with a pre em insecticide but will have to hit them directly which means a night time spray from emergence onwards. For monitoring them you need a yellow shallow bowl in the crop with some soapy water in.
I was just about to recommend spraying at night, if you need to spray at all.
We use some form of muck plus gypsum, but gypsum is mailing for the slugs. Interestingly my dad said they used to apply basic slag to deter cfsb on cabbage before insecticides became available. We have held off gypsum on one field and are going to apply after drilling to see if it has any effect. Really starting to clutch at straws now.

checked the yellow bowls this morning,a fair number of insects ,the usual big black beetles and a couple of multicoloured 2-3 mm long winged bodies plus a fair number of tiny unidentified gossamer winged insects and a creepy crawly or two but as yet no black green sheened beetles. So far so good ,crop emerging 1/4 no damage nibbles or holes as yet but am going for another look tonight.Sprayer still full on standby but now accompanied by fert spinner ready to go with a bit of N . Mrs 4 course reckons im becoming paranoid as have been back to the field at least half a dozen times since saturday

without starting another thread has anyone bothered using kat turbo or Banastar this time on their osr, if so would anyone know what price they are running at this year?

Madness without some certainty of survival £££££ ????
Rape pre ems are consigned to history along with pyretheroid treatments are they not??

I think so too, I was trying to convert a friend to the dark side of the force suggesting they were wasting their money. Was more for my own interest regards to the pricing , last time I priced a pyrethtoid or kat turbo or the like was 5 years ago.

Get on with the N ASAP. I’m going to be contrary and say that hgca survey said that between 30 and 80% of beetles in a population are resistant with an average of 50%. Therefore 1 and only 1 application may be justifiable. Make sure you apply when beetles are foraging and use appropriate wetters and water conditioner. Only apply if crop is being eaten faster than its growing. NB this will have an effect on beneficials and no effect on spring larval burden.....

But as I said crack on with N , why is it not already on? My opinion FWIW....

just back from morning trap check ,no sign of any damage in the emerging seedlings as yet, almost enough through now to make a crop and no definite beetles in the traps. Sprayer and fert spinner remain on standby. In answer to flat10 we did put some n on in the seedbed which whilst not enough am trying to wait until im more sure of a crop as what fert weve put on would be enough to get a late sown crop of wheat away if this osr fails, if we dont have to apply insecticide till later if it all keeps my "powder dry".
with standing grain at just under 19% atm could be combinining later so sorting drier and servicing harvest machinery

Cooler and wetter this year has made a huge difference, touch wood. The question is are there less beetles around this year or are they just delayed?

Hoping less beetles are around but fear I’m lulled into a false sense of security. Only the odd one in each trailer load. I fear we’ll be inundated next week when ours just gets up and going. Which factor in the weather means we’d actually have had an affect on the population?

I agree, there were lots of larvae in crops so sooner or later we must get the beetles
