osr sowing survival strategy

in the traps hardly anything from dawn to dusk ,plenty of various crittars from dusk to dawn

If you start to see leaf damage - shotholing - and cannot see the little critters just wait until dusk and then take a look with torch and as if by magic they appear. I gave up looking during the day. The yellow pans act as a kind of early warning system and save having to go out about 8.30 to take a look.

Chris Green used to say night time spraying was a fallacy

The late Dr Green was a genius but wrong on this. I've seen far more activity at night and they shelter during the day, especially hot days.

Osr sown a week ago is emerging nicely and hardly any shot holing yet. 25 degrees C here today which will wake them up from their aestivation holiday.

nothing this morning and cant see fb invading in this wind . The emerging seedlings are now making rows with the earliest just forming proper leaf shoot ,tramlines becoming visible will have to make a decision on top up N next few days if we remain uninvaded

Pictures? You are almost home and dry. How much N did you put into seedbed?

Sorry hindsight my skills dont allow me to take photos or insert smiley or grumpy faces Its only through tff that ive manged to connect with the world of the t internet and that is only on my steam driven screen with a keyboard attatched.
We put about 20 n in the seedbed along with p& k, agronomist round today, no recommendation to spray just keep the watching brief and passed a couple of complimentary comments re seedbed and establishment

Sorry if this has already been discussed in the thread. Companion crops...I have berseem clover and vetch. How many kilos of each with the osr seed? I was aiming to put in 6 kgs per ha of osr seed.
And what do you do for weed control?

I was told they are just more active In the day therefore it’s harder to see them as they bouncing around a lot Quicker. I don’t think anyone really knows

You are home and dry - get that nitrogen on now.

Not until at least 2 true leaves, then there are the larvae to worry about, but with minimal damage and good sized cotyledons now, the main foliar destruction risk period is passing. The flying beetles will prefer what emerges in the next 2-3 weeks.

how /when does the larvae damage occur

Ah Spin to follow a football analogy growing rape is a game of two halves.

First half is to get the crop established and away from the dreaded flea beetle adults. Then once done retire at half time for oranges and energy drinks to return for the second half sometime post xmas when one keeps a weather eye out for the larval attack that may still thwart the crop in March.

Its a bit like Norwich game against gaining an early one goal advantage then defending admirably until the 89th minute when opposition scores to equalise the game which goes into extra time and in the 94th minute the opposition score again to win. That is the point when one chops up the crop and drills spring barley. Bit like the game against Wolves on decemer 21st - result 1:2 to Wolves after Norwich went ahead.

Hey ho. The joys.

that larvae stage is the kill isn't it....i've grown some fodder rape and with higher seed rate...phosphite dressing...seedbed fert....and good growing conditions it got flea beetle but romped away from it......then i see fields of volunteer rape about going well and think 'whats the problem'......but that larvae damage looks a bitch:(
