After some teething issues last night and this morning (turns out the vacuum pump isn't man enough) we really motored through them this evening, and that was milking half on the dump bucket for sale tomorrow. Going to test a sample through the pipeline before moving over to it completely.
red tractor, wont like your door, but jp1 seems to have sorted it, keep up the good work.
sorted as i typed !

Picked them up this morning thanks, was just looking at the photo and nearly tagged you to guess where it was going!
Glad you picked them up as I nearly killed myself getting them in and out of the cattle trailer still strapped to the pallet so they didn't get scratched but then thought if they spent too long in Bob's barn they'd get a liberal covering of swift and other bird guano !!

The dump bucket is now officially semi retired (I'll still use it for fresh calves or ab treated cows) and we are on the pipeline!
Bactoscans came back at 12 and 8, pleased with that and DHI has given the thumbs up. All cows through in less than 40 minutes this morning. Did remark to Mrs G that we could easily cope with more now, she wasn't so keen.
Next job is getting on with the tank room.

We temporarily plumbed in the plate cooler, ran several wash cycles through it to clean it out, and then some milk to sample. Came back with a bactoscan of nearly 12,000 (000). Luckily we weren't putting milk to sell through it. Bit the bullet and stripped it down, the plates looked fairly clean but I soaked them in hot water and milkstone remover, gave them a scrub and put it back together.

It's fair to say there was a good bit more muck in there than I could see. Reassembled it, wash cycles through again and another test, bacto of 5 (000) so now it's fitted in properly and being used full time.

Should also add that the raw milk regulations are changing and the requirements of producers too, its all been delayed due to brexit etc. but the date to be compliant by is October. Is mainly a paperwork exercise, recording everything we do in a Food Management Safety Plan (FMPS) which is a HACCP under a different name. Also we have to more testing ourselves and the FSA visit less regularly. We had our audit on Wednesday which went well. Have been told by the inspector that not only is dairy farming a difficult industry to get into but selling Raw milk is the most difficult part of that industry (he meant it in a congratulatory way, I think).

13 in milk, plus one heifer who's hopefully in calf for next year. A couple more heifers to come soon too all being well.
Yes, we sell or process all the milk ourselves. 2 months ago we were getting 240 litres a day and it was selling itself. Now its taking a bit of work.

Excellent stuff Tim G !!! If I was 20 years younger I would love to put the milk from our 65 cows into bottle for the locals
I had that sort of romantic image too when we started. Reality is that very few people in our village have milk (less than 10 households I'd have thought) a few more in surrounding villages, but most travel 20 miles or more for it. Only three local farmers come for milk too, and that's not because most have their own cows!

Correct, it's because most farmers are completely and utterly shite at supporting their own industry, and complete and utter hypocrites in moaning about 'the general public' not doing so.
No matter, the environmental movement outnumbers farmers, and it is the environmental movement that will be your customers.
Fantastic thread, well done.

Are those from Seaways Services https://seaways-services.com/dairy/products/alternative-bottles-for-milk/ ?

Always found them excellent to deal with - How do you get over the Local Authority requirement for the screw cap bottles being Tamper Evident, of have you a tame EHO ?

The glass bottles came from https://www.grahamtyson.com/?gclid=...3A9I_gdGtKVchGGqiDaMaPgmclRUuZRRoCJ_cQAvD_BwE
The rep just turned up in the yard a while ago and gave us a sample bottle and a quote. I had a quote from Seaways too, but they were alot more expensive.
Most of the milk is in plastic, the tamper evident bit on the glass bottles did worry me but as our DHI pointed out, we are manning the shop, so risk is low and he's happy enough with it. Bottling does fall under the EHO but she leaves us alone. We have tried to engage with her but I don't think she's much idea in all honesty so we take advice and guidance from the DHI. The one time the EHO turned up to inspect the dairy, she was dressed more for a beach party rather than a farm visit...........
