overhanging neighbours trees

The law should Be changed, trees should not be allowed to be planted on boundaries.
The owner of the trees should be responsible for trimming them, not passing lorries or the council
The owner is responsible, even if you ask them for permission to cut down a tree on a roadside and they refuse if it falls and kills someone YOU are liable.

Crack on! call the police first just to notify there might be a disturbance and explain what you are doing.

As said
Get as many lads as possible to cut and chip the brash then stack the wood near to the boundary so he has a week to collect. (doubt he will)

Once you have gone he will have time to calm down and forget
the longer you are there the worse it will get for both parties.

People think they have more rights than others but we are all bound to the law

So whats the law if on a narrow lane the owner of a hedge with trees in it, it is over growing into the lane, it,s hard to drive buy without hitting your mirrors, broke one the other day, I would happily go a cut it back for free just to improve access. Whats wrong with people that clearly are being awkward and want to be a total pain in the ass, basically, any vehicle larger than a car has a problem getting through.
Surely just offer to trim the hedge for them, or present them with bills for replacement mirrors.

You need to give it a bit of time. Write to him explaining why you need to do it and gently explain that you have a legal right but you are happy to carry the cost of the work and would like his input to make sure all parties are happy with the work. You intend to start the work on xxxxx (about a month) then crack on with it.

I'm not sure giving people like this too much time to think about it helps. Its more likely to give them time to work themselves up into a stew about it, and gives them time to take action, such as trying to get the trees TPO'd or issuing some sort of legal injunction.

My experience of these sort of issues is that if you have right on your side, and its just the personal animosity of the other party you have to deal with its best to crack on and get the whole thing done before they have a chance to build it up too much in their heads. Make it a fait accompli. Then if anyone from any form of authority gets dragged in they'll just see that the law has been obeyed and refuse to take any further action.

This!

I had a problem boundary tree that in the interest of being a good neighbour, we decided to drop. The neighbour complained it was dropping a lot of dead branches in his garden... So I got a price from my tree man and started the process.

I also letter dropped the residents either side of the unhappy neighbour, and THEY did kick off. I had already spoke with the tree officer at the Council and he confirmed it did not have a TPO and also that my reason for felling was a valid one (not that he could do much anyway!) However, the whingers did so much moaning, the guy called me and asked to meet me on site to which I agreed.

Pleasant enough meeting with Tree Officer. He expressed his view that it would have been nice to preserve the mature oak with extensive tree works. I agreed and asked how much he would contribute to the cost.... 3 days later it was on the floor.

The pre-action talk with the TO was time well spent in my view, as it stopped dead, any protests.
