Every prime minister has the right to choose his team to take Britain into the general election and I am confident that my able successor at Defra, Liz Truss, will do an excellent job. It has been a privilege to take on the challenges of the rural economy and environment. However, I leave the post with great misgivings about the power and irresponsibility of – to coin a phrase – the Green Blob.

I have to give Owen Paterson a huge amount of credit.

In my experience he is 100% correct in exposing the rumour & lies spread by the Green lobby.

To my shame I swallowed the bile in various media outlets on GM - it took a fair while for Mr Paterson to keep soldiering on about GM & putting out the facts but eventually he changed my mind whilst at the same time exposing the crappy sources of information peddled by the likes of "The Guardian".

Thanks Mr Paterson - you've made me a more rounded individual whilst at the same time highlighting & instilling in me a need to question before jumping on a bandwagon.

Whilst I don't think he has always been 100% correct in the methods he chose (Gas TB sets rather than shoot !) I do think his intent has been very good.

Thanks for having the balls to stand up against the Green Lobby.

Strange, when heard that patterson had been sacked, my very first thought was that farmers and countryfolk should all march to downing street and demand his reinstatement and elevation to full cabinet status.
Dealing with DEFRA is noticeably better since he took over

You can't sack me! It's a smash in the teeth for 12million voters (and I even fought for you over bees): Former Environment Secretary Owen Paterson among a number of sacked ministers to react to 'male and pale' reshuffle with fury

Sacked Environment Secretary Owen Paterson told David Cameron that getting rid of him was a ‘smash in the teeth’ for rural voters.

In a blunt exchange, the Right-winger launched a fierce defence of his record in a bid to keep his Cabinet post.

He told the Prime Minister sacking him would play into the hands of Ukip and demanded: ‘Do you actually want to win the Election?’

I just can't understand why Owen Paterson was sacked.

Is it because David Cameron is an advertising man and cares more about the photogenics of the cabinet than it's actual track record?

Is it also because he doesn't respect promotion on merit but rather wishes to force a certain proportion of women into the cabinet regardless of their suitability.

I have no idea whether Liz Truss will do a good or bad job, and know nothing about her competences but I would imagine she won't even have got up to speed by the time of the election.

Another crass decision showing extremely poor judgement IMO.

Every person in the country not involved with farming knows and blames him for two things:
Killing badgers.
Flooding to whole of England.
That's why he got the boot. The whole reshuffle was one big PR exercise. Never mind if any of them are any good. Love her or hate her at least Maggie stuck to her guns. All these U-turns and indecision aren't doing the country any favours. <Right wing rant of the day over>

The Man is an arrogant p r i c k (cameron) and moving these women to prominent post for some PR exercise is a downright insult, to both the men who have lost their posts as above, and to the women who have moved into their shoes, I would have told him to get stuffed and left his party. I dont often have strong view on political matters, but just lately Cameron has shown his colours afaic. spineless.
As above. my rant over!

OK so after reading the Telegraph article, hands up all those who googled fritillary to find out which was the butterfly?
He was on an uphill battle against the inertia of Defra and " I've got splinters in my bottom from sitting so long on the fence" Nick Clegg.

You have to vote UKIP to get rid of Cameron and Osbourne ..(Tony Blair and Gordon Brown anyone ? )
by voting UKIP in enough numbers you send a clear message to the tories that you want a conservative party with conservative values....not this new left twaddle so beloved of cameron and his cronies

can someone please tell me whats the difference between a conservative governnment without the likes of Gove and Paterson and the labour party ?

Greenpeace demands Owen Paterson apologise over burning effigy claim
The former Environment secretary said Greenpeace had set an image of him on fire in protest as his controversial plans to control TB in cattle by culling badgers.

Owen Paterson is facing calls to apologise after claiming that he was “burnt in effigy” by green protesters when he was temporarily blinded from an illness.
