Own sheep ration

I'm thinking about mixing my own sheep ration for lambing ewes, the main bulk of it will be rolled barley and wondered what else I can add to make it a complete ration and a tough cost. was thinking about doing the same for lamb creep feed. Any advice would be appreciated

My ration for fattening hoggs is 50%whole barley wheat mix,35% soya hulls,15% soya rape maize distillers mix. Fed adlib to mine at the moment. Don't roll your cereals apparently I was told a long time ago

Do you feed your Hoggs ad-lib ? Every year I have to finish my tail enders on hogg feeders, been quoted between £235 > £265 for finisher pellets, what a rip off considering the price of cereals. Havent bought any yet, but intrested in mixing my own mix

. These are bought in store lambs. Yes they are on adlib from last week till they've all gone. Your provin looks very expensive, my ration will be way under £150 a ton.

Where do you purchase the soya and rape, you must buy it in bulk. Its a shame i cant buy them locally in tote bags. You must be giving your lambs some sort of minerals as well on top

We've fed out own home mix for a long time now and much prefer it to buying in cake. Currently the mix is;

650kg Oats
225kg Wheat
75kg Dennis Brinicombe Masterfeed mineralised sheep protein(3 bags)
50kg Molasses

We start off with 2 bags of protein per tonne (makes the mix 16% CP) and up it to 3 per tonne when around 2 weeks off lambing which makes it nearer to 18% CP. We do roll the cereals, but only very lightly. We use the same mix for creep feed as well but usually buy in a creep pellet and mix it 50:50 to help it flow through the creep feeders. Hope this has been of some help.

. We have a dairy herd and mix all the provin for them aswell. The Soya rape etc etc are in 29 ton artic tipped. The lambs are drenched 2 or 3 times whilst we've got them with vitamins and minerals, they are usually only on the mix for about 4 or 5 weeks so they don't get any minerals in their mix.

simple mix here , 6-2 whole barley / rape meal + mins ,comes out at about 19% ,for pre and post lambing ewes, along with clover silage have done very well on it , used to use soya which was better but red gut in the singles and best milkers took the shine off it ,

500kg whole oats
100kg rolled barley
100kg dark grains
100kg soya
100kg beet pulp
75kg molasses
25kg minerals
mix can be adjusted as necessary but normally start here, like different starch and protein sources but not absolutely essential

works for both milking ewes and lambs .. price of grains here a tad high so used a bit during winter or during dry times for feeding out

the above mixes i would wonder about Ca , Na and other min's etc to try and balance them better grains can be low in Ca

yes your right we add limestone flour and salt (vacuum) ,
interested in the dark grains zman uses , is that maize distillers ? local straights place had some delivered when we were there last week , smelt lovely , or maybe even use wheat distillers bit lower prot than rape , but more palatable ,

normally use wheat dark grains, lots of distillers up here used as main protein source for all the cattle and works well alongside the soya in the ewe diet, home mix is certainly not cheap but at least it does what it should do not like some cake
