Packer roller

Some manufacturers are going back to packers, the wedge type can make too good a job apparently. Horsch only offer a large (650mm?) packer for instance. Amazone recommended a packer for us. Depends on your mix of land as well.

We and a few other farmers have found on heavy land the wedge ring roller on the amazon packs it too tight and if it’s a bit damp the Coulter’s won’t go in very well. Plus they are heavy. Next time I’d go for a standard packer. On light fluffy land they might be ideal

Is a packer roller like the Amazone wedge ring roller or KV cracker roller much of an advantage on a combi drill over a standard flat tooth roller?

On lighter land which is what amazone recommend the wedge ring roller for then yes.
On heavy land you can struggle to get seed into the ground behind the ring roller.
Moved back to steel packer on mine because of this.

Beat me too it @snipe;)

As above we tried an amazone with wedge ring and didn't go well they blamed the roller in wet shitty going but I'm not convinced the lack of coulter pressure and single bevelled disc had more to do with it in my opinion after all they haven't just came up with a double disc set up for no reason

We've had problems in really light going with our maxi packer on our Kuhn stopping turning this year where a wedge ring would've been fine first time in about 18yrs since they started making a decent diameter packer due to soil being in funny condition

It was the biggest one available at the time but they're making a bigger one now

We are on light to medium soils with a bit of stone in it. Though coulters would run more consistent behind a wedge ring packer.

My land would be very similar to yours and I use a kv craker packer and it's excellent. I was on suffolk coulters and definately helps with better consistency and now on discs with press wheel behind and really pleased with results.
I admit it's not cheap but I would say it's worth every penny. I do have a hatred for packer rollers and setting scrapers! Although I have never experienced the bigger modern packers which will be far better than small diameter ones I had on old rau rototillers. The cracker packer makes a great job and is hassle free and would totally recommend it.

We run an Amazone with wedge ring packer, makes a nice job on wold land most of the time. When its to wet to be in the field it can smear the surface and restrict drilling depth. Drilled maybe 4000 acres with it and the flints rip it to bits, rebuilt once, then replaced completely and will need doing again over winter. Anyone tried the steel wedge ring option?

Who do you get the rubber tyre rings from and do you replace the orange spacers , Tim Smith 2/3ds price , will have to split it as middle ring has moved and has a crack in it and worried it will let go and let the rings into scrapers

I got a price from local dealer and when I said no rush we are doing it in winter they knocked about a third off
Best option the second time was a new and unused complete packer from Amazone, they had removed it for a customer wanting a standard packer roller

Afraid not Will. Bought second Harrow with steel packer to put on combi drill and use original one with wedge ring as a stand along machine now.
Maybe one of the Amazone dealers might have something suitable lying in their yards?

Depends very much on the ground, but we sell Kv and always sell them on Packer Rollers, but on a combi we insist on them having carbide scrapers! If you keep them clean they will keep turning and have a very large diameter, the teeth are also in line with the coulters so ground is consolidated before them.
They do offer the Kerner Cracker packer on combi’s also, and I guess I’m stronger Land would definitely be an advantage but not that I’d have experience with.

My first Amazone had the steel packer, forever renewing or altering the scrapers, second one had the s/h car tyres , got quite an expert at changing them until that size became extinct. present one is the rubber wedge ring,,11 seasons and never have to give it a thought.
