How essential is it to get back to shiney metal? Paint sticks better to rust so if you remove all loose stuff, and provided its dry, is it ok to paint on top? And how good are those rust stabilising primers?
Personally I never leave rust but... there are several paints international coatings do that you can paint straight over light surface rust. It grips it and doesn't allow the rust to bleed through. How it works I don't know, I'm not a chemist. But it does. When I'm back at the yard I'll take a photo of a can and put it on. I'm not sure how available it is to non painting outfits be we can supply it if need be. It's I think £55 for 5l inc activator and thinner. Never done any thing but sprayed it so I don't know about brushing or rolling application.
If not blasting back to metal, key up with an orbital sander. 80 or 120 grip for primer. And top coat for a commercial finish 240. Automotive finish 320,400 or 500 grit.
