I've never used pallets or tyres under bales. How do those of you who do, manage when you are emptying the shed? You can't drive on pallets as you would break them, so presumably you pick them up and stack them. You could drive on car tyres I suppose, but if they are picked up, can you successfully scoop them up in a bucket, or does it mean manhandling them?
Is it really that hard for some people to get off there arse in the cab to move some pallets!!

Tyres, pallets, plastic sheets etc with all the time and hassle involved concrete sounds attractive and over a few years maybe not as dear as you think also can be swept up and shed maybe used for other things as well
I asked someone about all of this.

He said years ago he knew of a farmer that had a load of rails, from the local pit railway, put down over concrete to form a grid for the bales to sit on.

He didn't think it was worth the hassle, but I imagine it either wasn't enough of a gap, or the gaps filled in too easily because the bales didn't have enough support.

Has anyone ever heard of/ thought about going to such an extreme?

In the past I have laid big bale hay on d section fencing rails on a concrete floor, it worked in part but in future I think pallets will be far more effective. Surely no big deal to move and stack them with the loadall as they become exposed after removing bales during the winter?

You have to keep stopping to pick um up. This is why quality straw, kept properly over winter costs.......

If you use the big pallets horse bedding comes on you can often lay the pallets out and pick them up using the bale spikes makes life easier

Also with pallets on a crushed concrete floor you can put two one side of the bale if the stack is leaning and across the back of the barn put the back of the pallet on a fence post to tip the stack in stop it falling through the back of the barn

On concrete floor i sacrifice maybe 5 bales of straw under 700 bales of hay or straw. Just shake it out and have a layer underneath each bale. On stone floor i lay old curtains off a curtainsider and put bedding on top of us. Bit of messing but means no black arses come selling time
