Paraquat

Banned here since 2007 as statedin the article. Also stated in the article are farmers approach to chemicals which will lead to contamination.
Phrases such as "going everywhere, running down your arms" and "sleeves rolled up" give an indication to the value given to correct PPE.
It is a desperate shame if people are suffering for their mistakes but it always says quite clearly on every pesticide label "wear the correct PPE".

I have done a great many acres with paraquat with a knapsack and about the same again with a boom sprayer. Was always careful but can't claim it was never on me, most especially the time the sprayer pipe burst and filled the cab.

My cousin is a PhD studying Parkinson’s at Cambridge Uni, and my dad is a sufferer. My cousin is pretty ademant that it’s almost impossible to pin the condition on any one factor like OP’s or a particular weed killer, despite people’s desire to find a specific “thing” to blame. It’s not that simple unfortunately.

But if anyone wants to donate their brain to my cousin, she’s always on the look out for more to slice up!

Gramoxone ,PDQ ,,horible stuff ,,still remember the guy who used to do double glazing adverts doing himself in by drinking it
Teb Moult. There used to be lots of cases of gardeners keeping it in pop bottles and kids drinking it though i was under the impression they put something in it to make it undrinkable. It’s still for sale in Kenya.

PDQ was a combination of paraquat and diquat from memory?

To be honest, I used to use diquat a bit, especially on spuds. Worked a treat.
Gramoxone was a useful chemical on fenland potatoes wait until about 10 per cent up then blitz them. Best for burning off potatoes was DNBP get that on your skin and you went yellow.Safer than sulphuric acid we went to after it was banned.

Before it was banned ,,boss had 10 ltr left and something called Gesatop, a grey powder ,used on raspberry canes (so he was told ) ,,back of the yard grew a mass of briars and nettles ,,couldnt get rid of them so he mixed the two together and through it over the rubbish ,,with in a week ,the lot was dead .
Bit of straw ,some cherry and swan vestas soon tidied it up ,,thing was,, nothing ever grew there ever again

Paraquat was so deadly that by the time you realised you had a mouthful of it you were too late. That was why being kept in old unlabelled bottles in garden sheds was such a risk.
