The general rules are no more than 80% stocking rate for close up dry and fresh cows.

No more than 120% stocking rate for milkers.


Some people manage to make higher stocking rates work.

Eventually I think more than 100% stocking rate won't be allowed.

My farm assurance bloke pulled me up on it last year 162 cows in a 150 bed shed but the only reason he noticed is because all the beds were full and there was still the 12 cows standing.

gold standard would be wide enough that a cow can reverse from the feed fence and get out without having to do a three point turn because her arse has hit the back wall or cubicle bars

15 ft here for big cows is plenty wide enough but wouldnt go narrower unless forced
10ft in kennels is ok for jerseys and x breeds, just ...

What drives me crazy is when you go look at new set-ups and they have auto cow brushes, auto blinds, LED lighting, light ridges, Lely Juno and any other paraphanalia you can think of, but yet say they can't afford to have anymore than a 10ft scrape passage :banghead:

I would rather have 14ft passages between beds as a priority over any of the crap listed above

Ah but ....
all of the gimmicks will each generate you an extra half litre per cow dont you know :rolleyes:
