Pay rates for 16year olds?

i have a 16year old lad potentially wanting to do an apprenticeship starting in summer, I know what the official pay rate is for apprentices is(even I think it’s not enough if he’s a grafter) but just what rate of pay is fair for him doing odd days on weekends holidays etc, until he starts properly.

I think initially there will be a fair bit of training to do, till he’s much use, but don’t want to discourage him with derisory pay rates if he’s keen to learn.

He’ll be on feeding calves/young stock, scraping out, and basic tractor work (no milking/we have robot for that)

£6

I’ve got a lass here on placement not sure what I should be giving her she’s getting cash at the moment. She couldn’t do a great lot at the beginning but she’s capable of being left in the lambing shed to do everything but the most problematic things now.

Whatever happened with the unreliable lad you had working for you ?

I sat him down and called him a twunt whilst looking him dead in the eyes. I thought that might make him realise how far he had pushed me. It didn’t sadly so we let him go.

He’s now back in college doing a different corse. Sadly he got himself into a lot of trouble between though. Stealing his mums car nearly getting it crushed. Caused thousands of pounds of damage. Real shame. Hopefully he’ll sort himself out now

We call it £5 an hour for the first few weeks till you can work out if it’s worth pursuing. Pretty limited at 16 with no experience. Makes maths easy cause I almost got 5 fingers on one hand
Move up if they’re worth it!

I was thinking of starting on £5 to £6 and see how he gets on, he’s not on early starts or anything and have said if he can get a lift here on a morning we’ll arrange transport to get him home. If he proves worth it after a few weeks I’ll up it a bit.
