pea barley mix

Saw someone, could have been on youtube, growing barley and peas together then combining them to get a high energy and protein feed... anybody doing this on here? Any good for feeding sheep/lambs with?
i'm toying with the idea of putting all my reseeds into cereals before grass, leaving me straw for my sheep bedding and barley for creeping lambs/sheep.
What are the growing costs of barley/oats/triticale/pea barley mix? Cost of seed/spray/fert etc and someone to spray it and combine it.... I'll do all cultivations myself. TIA

maybe a bit risky for a first go at cereals... couldn't find alot of stuff about it on the web, cant be that popular.

Never used it ourselves it seems quite expensive, as G in G suggests it may be cheaper to by the separate seed and mix yourself.

Oats and peas we have used as a cover crop and undersown successfully.

Did combine some oats and peas for someone last summer for feeding to dairy cows, seemed to work fine

Looking at this this spring as we grow 100 ac or so of SB for rolling for beef fatteners. Normally home save barley so could buy some peas in. Would it be better to sow separately in 2 passes at an angle to each other

Possible benefits

Better ground coverage
Seed wouldn’t separate out in the drill.
Thoughts?

I'd be whole cropping mine, but yes I don't see the need for it to be ready mix

Wholecrop I can understand, we do a Oats, Peas and grass mix when we reseed which is great.

But unless I'm picking it up wrong, the OP was talking of growing the mix to combine? I think I'd rather put a field in of each then mix it as I need it in the shed...

That's the way I took it to, you'd no have to bother about matching crop maturity for a perfect combining time either?

Yeah, ive drilled sb and peas together but only with an MF 30 ,deep as you can but with respect to the barley.
ive not found the mix to separate in the hopper.

i would think drill barley first if youre gonna go twice.

combines nicely if you get the timing right.way better than peas on their own ime.
Having Matched the 2 varieties as closely as poss.ie using early ripening barley

nice haulm / straw as well.

edit ; i think @Devon James has drilled them with the Claydon.
well unless my memory is bad....

peas quite often go flatter than a flat thing at harvest.:cry:
....the barley or whatever... holds it for the combine.
combicropping can be better for other reasons as well.

I don't know what I dread most, peas and barley being combined together, or the idea of sowing them with grass as well. Poor grass.

Growing cereals is not difficult, you will need a bit of agronomic guidance perhaps, but if you aren't aiming for a barn busting crop it need not be too complex and they make an ideal entry for grass.

They are a good way to control weeds and clean land up.

Don't underestimate the utility of weed control in new leys and in the proceeding cereal crop. I still drive by former clients fields today and a lot of them are still free of docks and thistles, just a green oasis.
