Balancer engine unit ,we had one go in a massy fitted with a Perkins .put a magnet in the sump and look for metal!
I think that you are getting more like it, I had one problem b4 with bolt appearing when dropping oil out before fitting the now problem engine and haven't investigated that engine yet.
Would it do any harm short term or is it a big job rectifying it.

It is an easy job to fix just drop the sump and you are at the balancer unit ,a new one was about 2grand I think massy paid for it after a lot of arguing, it had only done about 2000 hours at the time and the tractor had been a lot of trouble. Ours was only noisy at pto revs and when we stripped it ,it had very little play as for driving on you can't fix it so I suppose you can't make it much worse

After pulling sump off old/first engine and 2 bolts missing, would it be possible to tighten up on noisy engine with locking compound and maybe hope for silence or am I just trying to be optimistic?

What bolts were they?

Ah yes we use the technical term "groaning" all the time ...........
Bolts that basically hold the balancer screwed up into I presume the casting.
First engine did the same, only i needed for blocking silage at the time and was ok at 1400 1500 revs but eventually got noisy at them revs and when old was dropped bolt appeared at drain plug. Further investigation two days ago revealed 2 bolts loose one sheared and one out.
I will take a few pictures tomorrow if I am near it. My mechanic works at lots of cx and mc McCormick and mine is the only two that he has come across.
