Perkins 6.354 oil control rings

How many oil control rings should be fitted to this engine?

I pulled the pistons out, all six only had the top ones, the bottom ring groove below the gudgeon pin was empty.
The new ring kit has arrived and it has 2, presumably for both.

What to do?

This was the rings on a 6.372 we had in bits last year, which I believe is just a slightly bored out version of a 6.354

On the Massey 35 4 pot engines they left the lower oil control ring off (similar to yours, below the gudgeon pin) as it was wearing out the bores. There seems to be a great debate on any engine rebuild thread as to use the lower oil ring or not. As with all things forums no clear guidance emerges!
Perkins are still about and they are actually really very helpful, give them a call, am sure they'll tell you whats what.

There’s 5 rings for each piston on these engines
Make sure you have standard pistons
Also if it’s turbocharged it will need longer pistons if it hasn’t already got them in

OK, thanks. I think that pretty much answers my question.
It will be going back in a combine that only does 50 hrs a year
