perkins engine trouble

have a 4 cylinder engine non turbo in a 20 year old thwaites dumper,
it was bringing a heavy load about 2 miles and it was losing power dramatically until it was almost crawling.
We parked it up then and turned off.
When we tried to start it 15 mins later it wouldn't turn over at all.
when we waited another 30 mins it started immediately without any delay.
The dumper had a reconditioned transmission just before this happened and I am dubious as to the potential mistake that could have been made when they did this work and i feel i am not getting a truthful verdict from the mechanic.
The mechanic is claiming engine is old and worn and needs new pistons and liners if i want to use the machine to its full potential.
There is a small blow in the crankcase breather for the past 3 years without effecting the performance until the transmission was overhauled.
I have an opinion from a friend that it may be a cooling problem with radiator or water pump.

does anybody have experience of a perkins engine with this happening to it?

The engine must have a cooling problem, getting hot to the point of not even starting.Maybe worse since the transmission overhaul as it is working the engine harder. Blocked rad, faulty thermostat , is the tourque converter cooled by the engine radiator?and check the water pump.

Do you have any engine thermostat and pressure Gages working to give you a indication of whats happening, bad news if an engine is going tight.

the mechanic that gave it the transmission job is sending the dumper back to me on monday and I will be giving it to a man that knows a lot more about engines, there are no working gauges on the machine, but has a good history, it hasn't been burning any oil and is serviced regularly. it hasn't overheated in the past, but even when it did heat up recently we could still remove radiator cap and expansion tank was empty, which has me thinking it is a cooling problem ie water pump or blocked somewhere??

I, ve had them in the past with a small crack in the water pump, only spays mist around the fan and is hard to notice there is a leak but over several hours it runs out of water. Try running with out the rad cap for a while to see if level drops quick.
