Perkins timing case

Hello.
Got a massey 6460 T2, with the Perkins 1000 engine (and VP44 pump, yes - that one)
The alternator bracket has snapped off the timing case (examining the fracture, its been broken a while).
Ive quickly asked a couple of people if they can weld it in place, both of whom have sadly declined :(

Doees anyone know of a timing case for it? I rang @Massey breaker who is looking. Maybe @leone75 or @ACEngineering can help?
Also, does anyone have any brief instructions on it. Ive taken the fuel pump off before, but this will require all the timing gears off I suspect (a big job).
thank you

If you already had the pump off once then the rest i quite easy IMO.

The gears are marked its only the pump shaft that isn't keyed so you have to lock the pump on TDC which you already know as you had it off once.

The only bit i'm OTT on is setting the crank on TDC, the easy bet way i find is to drop Number 1 valve on top of the piston and use a DTI gauge to find the exact TDC, then you gently turn the gear on the injector pump anti clock wise to remove the back lash in the gears and tight the 4 bolts holding the gear to the hub on the pump. Other dont bother but I do, too much effort required to adjust timing once it back up and running! as the water pump has to come back off.

There are loads of different perkin timing cases and i know the steel case i sell as kit to convert the Manitou MLT 627 is out of stock everywhere for months. nothing comes quickly out of perkins anymore even if they have in on the shelf(n) MF will probably get it you quicker!

aluminum cases vary in price but can often be between £100 to £200 so not as expensive as you first think.

I cant do anything til Monday unless you got a part number but speak nicely to @leone75 with the engine serial number and he may give you a price and be able to see what the stock level is before monday.

its a while since i took the pump off (thankfully) I do remember though i did not check for TDC how you explain. Maybe i just marked it all up before i took it off and reassembled same?

I guess i could get this one welded when off?
whats the advantage of the steel case and what else is needed?

thanks

The standard case is weak so when manitou bolted a big twin hyd pump to it they crack. Steel case alot stronger so cures it.

Wouldn't be needed for you I doubt, just need to be more carefull of the alternator, never had alternator damage timing case before!

Are there no other bolt holes nearby you can use and then just fabricate a new bracket?

tomorrows thought activity. would certainly save a lot of work.

The perkins alternators don't normally just mount to the timing case IMO normally there is a bracket bolted to the side of the block then with a couple long bolts right through the timing case in to the block, the alternators pivot off that bracket then they have a short straight link to the timing case for tensioning the belt

McCormick did a modified bracket for the 1100 series to bolt the alternator to the head instead of the timing case as they always rattled loose and killed the timing case, I have converted a few but u do need a different alternator as it then mounts upside down.
