Best sprayed off and put into kale or something first, then drill spring barley in the spring. This will break the pest cycle and give you two swipes of glyphosate as well. I have no experience of direct drilling barley into grass but can see some immediate pitfalls.

The barley is only wanted as a break for the grass. And to be used as a forage crop. It’s for my neighbor all I would be doing is the drilling and spraying. Although it was my idea originally. I thought barley as flee beetle don’t eat it and spring barley might grow away from slugs and frit fly wire worm etc. I’ve stresse keep it cheap and spend nothing except seed and fert. Any other ideas he wants to graze until xmas grow a forage crop and re seed in autumn without cultivation?

I've done spring barley into really old grass and it worked. I drilled it in early may last when it was warm but still damp and it had a good chance to fly out of the ground. Done the same this year too and it looks well after the rain last few days. Slugs have eaten some of my oats though but not enough to ruin it.
But cheap agressive forage rape or something might be better for you? Use cheap seed you can go again if it gets eaten by the barsteward beetle.

If you are going to grow the barley then use the chance to put lime and P and K right and then make use of proper cereal herbicides which will crucify most grassland weeds irrespective of their size and they are usually cheaper than grassland sprays.

Keep the seed rate high and chuck the nitrogen on after drilling.

Did you try it in the end? I would like to give this a go, would terminating the grass in the early summer well before Autumn help with breaking the pest cycle @ollie989898 ?

I tried that this year, burnt off then DD'd forage rape in. Two months later, the huge grass seed reservoir had come through better than any grass ley I have ever drilled in my life!

Now all eaten off and going to roundup again in 3 weeks time to try and get some break...
