Hi all, my name is Jay Sangster-Hawkins. I'm a family man of three children from Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire
I have a keen interest in Metal Detecting and history. It's a fascinating pastime that I enjoy very much in my spare time. I joined this forum because I was wondering if a kind farmer/landowner has some land that they wouldn't mind me using my detector on? I can travel outside of Wiltshire within reason so I'm not limiting my search too locally.
Finding permissions for my hobby has proved to be more difficult than I anticipated. I am not the type of person that enjoys knocking on strangers doors, potentially disturbing people at work. So I think a forum post is a polite way of seeking somewhere to practice my hobby. I guess I'll have to go that route if I get no replies though.
Obviously I have full liability insurance with the NCMD, I abide by their strict metal detecting code. You would barely notice that I had been there as I discretely dig small holes and cover them back up again.
Any valuable finds will be shared equally 50/50 between you and I after the local Museum have recorded the artefacts. I can also show you other interesting small finds if you're interested and if there is something you would like to keep, you would be more than welcome to do so!
I know it's a big ask and I fully understand if you decline my request. It is not at all easy to find private land to detect on. Maybe because some people/articles in the media have given the hobby a bad reputation! I assure you that most detectorists would respect your land as if it is their own.
I only ever detect with my brother or take along one of my two young boys. They enjoy helping dad uncover the past and searching for long lost pieces of history.
I would of course help to keep your land clean and free of rubbish by picking up anything I see. That would be the least I can do in return. My email address should you want to contact me is [email protected]
Thank you.
Jay
