Permission To Shoot - Crop/Livestock Protection (Midlands)

Hi Everyone,

Like many others on here, I am hoping to find some land to shoot on in/around the Tamworth area in order to keep a lid on those pesky pigeon and crows (IAW GL26 & GL31 as they are now...!) as well as squirrels and other pest bird species once the new relevant General Licences are rolled out.

I have been rifle shooting for about 15 years and shotgun shooting for about 2 years - I am a member of BASC and despite my more limited 2 barrel experience compared to a rifle, i've been hitting the clays and also spent the winter on a local Pheasant & Duck shoot, as a beater and as a gun.

I'm 28, honest, trustworthy, work full time in the Aviation industry - but on shifts (3on, 3 off) so have weekday and weekend availability - and, as mentioned above, currently live on the outskirts of Tamworth, although all being well with the estate agents, i'll shortly be moving to Twycross.

I appreciate land permissions generally come from building a good rapport with farmers / land owners rather than some randomer knocking at the door or positing on a forum, but if you are having any pest issues, it would be great to discuss any possible arrangement further.

Many thanks.

Quick update: I am now living in Twycross (Warwickshire), so if there is anyone local I can assist with pest control, now the new (workable) GL's have been issued, it would be great to discuss a suitable agreement with you.

Many thanks.

I think that's a tad unfair. My view is that however remote the possibility may be, it's worth an ask - nothing ventured nothing gained.

The worst we can be told is 'no'. In which case, we accept it with good grace and try our luck elsewhere.

Don’t take this the wrong way - but you’re doing a good job of making yourself sound like a muppet.

Have you ever considered that firstly, most farm land is already shot over / hunted etc and it’s a case of dead mans shoes.

Secondly - many farmers shoot / hunt themselves, their children do, or their actual real world friends.

Thirdly - an air rifle isn’t necessarily a very efficient way to cull vermin in numbers.

Fourthly - there are a hell of a lot of people wanting permission to shoot so most will get told no or it ends up like the Wild West, and generally these days a lot of people are quite twitchy about random folk with guns wandering about!

Finally - the average age on here is probably far lower than the average age or uk farmers.

Have a nice day and good luck!
