Pet owners face £20,000 fines and jail time for feeding their pets a vegan diet

UK pet owners are being warned they face fines of up to £20,000 fines and a possible jail sentence for not feeding their four-legged friend the correct diet.

It comes after a study found more pet owners are feeding their pets a vegan diet.

Cats need meat to survive as they can develop health problems if they are not getting the right nutrients, including taurine, Vitamins A and B, arginine and arachidonic acid.

Certain breeds of dogs will struggle on a plant-based diet because their short guts make it difficult to digest high-fibre foods.

Which is why UK law protects pets from missing out on what they need to consume through their diet.

The UK's Animal Welfare Act outlines how people must ensure their pets get a “suitable diet” and “meet all of your dog's nutritional needs”.

They can analyse the sh!t, believe it or not. There was a case locally where someone was feeding raw offal to pigs. Animal Health turned up and took dung samples. Not sure if anything came of it though.

We had a vet student on lambing practice, I can't remember if she was Vegan or Vegetarian, she didn't have much energy and was always cold!

It seems strange to me that pet owners are fined for not feeding their pets properly, but the same people won’t be fined for not feeding their children properly.

I don’t know why that surprises me though in this batshit mental world.

To be fair, my dogs all quite like a bit of carrot when I'm pulling them.

Not that I'd consider carrots anything other than a novelty inclusion in their diet.
