How is a taxation of carbon footprint going to allow
any government to keep inflation in check?
Goods would go up in money across the board far greater
than anything we've seen over the last couple of years.
Perhaps they would keep inflation in check by double digit
interest rates be careful what you wish for.

food is too cheap- it’s price needs to better reflect production and environmental cost

things can not continue as they have - it clearly doesn’t work

I agree that food has been far too cheap and plentiful that
farmers have been undervalued as a consequence but this
government has no intention of making food dearer ,quite the
opposite in fact. They are not going to put themselves out of office
by raising the cost of living for the average Joe who are already having
to deal with much higher energy bills.
The well being of farmers incomes would be well down the Tories agenda.

You say that....and it's true. But there have been exmaples - governments introduced green levies on energy which have raised the cost of living, for example.

The issue is that the population have been led to believe they can have things all ways. Only now are they waking up to the fact that Net Zero has a cost. The same is true of food, and the farmed/managed environment they see around them.

Only a few days ago the conservative enviroment network (CEN),with 116 Tory MPs
among its members, has argued the treasury should temporarily fund the enviromental levy placed on electricity Bill's to ease the burden of rising energy
costs for the consumer.Like you say they are slowly waking up to the fact that all
these good intentions add to the cost of living. That's why I cant see any government
having a genuine interest in making imported foods more expensive with a carbon tax.

I wonder when I read DEFRA being blamed that the reality is DEFRA is pushed by Govt to come up with schemes to meet climate change requirements based on promises that will always be hard to carry out. Similar to the energy industries I suspect.

Agreed, it’s not always possible with a farm neither. Bank or family will need paying off first.
Of course but owning land is a damn site more privileged than 99% of the population. Reading on here anyone would think it’s a punishment forcing people to run loss making businesses to ‘feed the world’, oh so selfless!

rent or contract farm ultimately the landlord gets all the sub - its factored into the rent for me or any other farm

It sounds straight forward , but I’m sure there are people who own farms that would struggle to sell as they’ve inherited it and hope to pass it on . To be the generation that sells up is unthinkable to many .
So sitting on a big asset, but not generating a great income. A millstone to some .

Of course there’s the sentimentality side of it. It the fact is, if sh!t hit the fan in myriad of ways, the land owner can realise a massive amount of money very quickly that your average on the street cannot. Simple as that.

without doubt and I understand 100%

unfortunately business has little space for sentiment and sentiment doesn’t make an asset worthless

there are many ways an inherited land asset can be VERY valuable without need to sell it however, from simply farming without rent (significant advantage over farmers who do pay rent ) to providing leverage to borrow against

its always possible - you can’t pay family or bank off more than you sell it for unless in negative equity…….. that would be impossible on inherited land

what you mean is “its not always what you want to do”

big difference

PLEASE Why can't someone on here do something that when you come back /log in that the first thing that pops up is this petition page.

sadly it doesn’t look like there is a hope in hell of getting 10k signatures

demonstrators the level of apathy and exhaustion among farmers on such issues i guess

are the NFU doing anything about this ? TFF is not a lobby groups like they claim to be

Have you signed it, or do you think it’ll evolve into something useful .
maybe you see it as a business opportunity if other farms go to the wall.

i signed it days ago

sadly it will make no difference

i’m not interested in expanding my farm business, in fact its far more likely to shrink in terms of food production from what i see on the horizon

as always i will do whatever makes best financial sense for me, my family and others I care about (ie employees)

Not sure if Clive realises when he gives his subs go to the landowner speech but some rents are less than the BPS is, so in those cases he can't be right.
Also this tosh about anyone that owns land is wealthy what a load of sh1t that statement is, what if its .01 of an acre on top of a hill somewhere.
Honestly these blanket statements are fecking rubbish
Well said finally someone that has sense
