Volkswagen have a lot to answer for.

What I find sadly amusing about Volkswagen is that they were hung out to dry over the fixing of emissions tests, a rather large deceit, and yet as soon as they claim to be able to build EV's with a long ranges the EV lobby are all over them with hugs and kisses! Do they really think the leopard has changed its spots when it comes to being honest?

As I have stated before, I have no issue with those who freely choose to buy an EV, if they want to head backwards in time with batteries then good luck to them.

What I do object to is the coercion and bribery of governments coupled to the lies and hype of the EV lobby interfering with that choice.

If you need just one picture. Doubtless driven by some pompous a@se claiming his vehicle was zero emissions because nothing normally comes out of the vehicle exhaust pipe

It's not me you have to convince - I love a diesel car........................but it's HM Government, the Green lobby and scientists that you have to convince

Ultimately the 'dieselgate' scandal has tarnished diesel cars. beyond redemption !!!

Diesel cars WILL be forced off the roads by 2025 or sooner, firstly by stealth - higher taxation and levies, then an outright ban via the MOT testing, is my hunch

OK, lets have a look at those three bodies you mention.

HM Government
. What's in it for them? First up is that EV's will usher in road pricing, vehicle tracking in other words, another brick in the wall of total surveillance, and, what's more, control. When an EV is connected to the grid it won't be just topping up with energy, the Chinese (who else) have already cottoned on to the potential.

Local laws in China require more than 200 electric-car manufacturers—but not the makers of internal combustion cars—to transmit 61 data points, including global positioning location as well as state of charge, the most recent charge, the make, model, color, and total odometer mileage of each vehicle in real time to dozens of government-backed monitoring centers—not unlike traffic centers in the U.S.

No doubt its a two way exchange and governments will, sooner or later, start geofencing cars and their occupants. Going to a protest meeting of some sort, or are in a dispute with the government? They'll have a switch on your car to turn it off.

The Green Lobby. They are completely naive and clueless and are being rogered raw over EV's. EV's are not green, the batteries ensure they have a far larger manufacturing carbon footprint than engine powered cars, and then there is the problem of battery disposal and/or recycling. As already mentioed the terrestial cobalt supply is very finite indeed, so the plan is to suck it up off the sea floor, destroying a mainly pristine and unexplored environment. Just how environmentally friendly is that? Cars will also become disposable items, lasting the life of the battery, currently estimated at between 8 - 10 years. Basically the green cause has been hijacked by big money, which doesn't give a toss about saving the planet.

Scientists. Which scientists do you have in mind? It might be noted that scientists have also come up with a way of making diesels ultra clean and extracting carbon from the atmosphere and recycling it as fuel.

So what will the farmer run around be then as I’m not sure there are any 4x4 Petrol alternatives other than some of the posh Chelsea tractors which don’t lend themselves to mud, dogs and bale string let alone pulling a stock trailer.

The EV lobby just haven't thought it through, and neither will they, if it means screwing their little schemes.

DSG on a GTD works well... Manual and I find your kept busy shifting gears.

The GTI I think suits the manual better.

I wasn't 100% convinced with the DSG though as I found it made some odd choices of change.

Kind of agree with that. There are times I'll flick it over into manual to stop it upshifting on certain roads. But there's a lot of times I have it in manual anyway :p

Friend has a volvo car .it's 09 S60 I think. It only had 80 K on it when the dpf filter blocked up. Garage tried some chemical to clean it but end up putting a new one on it.
Total bill was near 1k euro. Damm expensive running these clean cars.
Volvo parts are expensive, plus labour, plus VAT, so it all adds up. There are aftermarket DPF's coming onto the market now though and an independent mechanic should be able to offer substantial savings on some cars, probably the most popular.

Also DPF units have improved a whole lot in the last ten years. Nevertheless it is a unit that is prone to failure if something upstream, like an injector or the EGR or air filter develops a fault.

Oddly, nobody is interfering with my choice. Yet.

The whole emissions scandal came out of the states, their refineries are not geared up to producing diesel, and neither are GM, Ford and Toyota tooled up to manufacture diesel motors en mass, both significant lobbyists of the EPA. I rather suspect that once the diesel’s biggest benefit - range - caught on with the general public in a big country where needed, it would caused significant financial harm to these interests. Look up the Teflon/DuPont/C4 poisonings as a case in point albeit from the 80s 90s. Vw just made themselves a scape goat by bending the rules too much!

Did not bend any rules/scapegoat, they engineered and installed software designed to cheat...........they almost got away with it too.
There troubles are not over yet, just this week the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission) announced their intention to prosecute VW.......seems while carrying out their illegal activities they were also issuing bonds to raise capital...........that's a big no,no and will cost them mega money.
A more corrupt organisation is hard to imagine.

As to the other point about the availability of diesel fuel, where do you think the millions and millions of trucks' obtain their fuel..?

An interesting perspective, I must admit that's a new one me. I do recall the European refineries had to be heavily invested in when diesel was being pushed, but they managed it without drama.

And yet the EV lobby think the sun shines out of VW's posterior because they have decided that batteries are the way ahead. This is probably due to the fact that they are in bed with an organization that may be even more corrupt, the Chinese government. China has interests in up to 80% of the worlds lithium supplies, follow the money as they say.
