phone & tablet

Ok, here's what I was thinking. Perhaps it isn't possible.

Is there a tablet which has the facility to make and receive phone calls, I.e through the hands free in a vehicle.

I was thinking that a tablet mounted in the tractor could be handy for checking emails and inputting spray/fert records on the go.
Probably best to have a separate phone that can go in my pocket when not in the tractor. The tablet would need its own data connection though....

Confused....

Just link your tablet to your phone using your phone to produce a wifi hotspot. You can then do all you mention but your calls will come in via your phone. No need to take it out your pocket though. Just connect it to your stereo via bluetooth. It may sound complicated but it really isn't. Once set up it will all just work without any effort from you.

when my phone is connected to my macbook calls and texts come through the laptop even if the phone is in my pocket

I've never looked but guess you could probably set up an iPad in a similar way ?

The iphone and Mac have to be on the same wifi network for this to work (iOS 8 and Mac OS X 10.10) think you can throw an iPad into the mix, but not out in the field unless it will work over personal hotspot.

Would you not just get an iPhone 6+?

Not an IT expert, getting a work iphone tomorrow for the first time. Dont know what model yet.
I don't even know how to set up a personal wifi hotspot, from what you are saying it could be the way to go. Just get an iPad to go with it.

I like the idea of a good sized screen for big fingers in the tractor cab, therefore I'm keen on a tablet for the job.

It's simple, go Settings-Personal Hotspot-switch it on- give it a password.

so, moving this on a bit. Do you think the following would be possible?

I have now got an iPhone (5C), I'm sure I'll get used to it......:banghead:

If one goes down the road of creating a wifi (or perhaps Bluetooth) hotspot in the cab and allies a cab mounted iPad with it, could one input spray and fertiliser jobs on the iPad as they are completed. My hope would be that the data could be saved in the cloud (a simple Excel sheet or perhaps on a fancy cloud based crop package - e.g. Farmflo over here).

I have never even touched an iPad so am not very familiar with their capabilities and I don't want to get spoofed by a shop saleman.
I do like the idea of a tablet (e.g. iPad) as its large screen would be much easier for inputting data than the miniscule screen on the iPhone.
Can you do Excel sheets on an iPad?
Can you make phone calls through an iPad which is connected via hotspot to a iPhone?

Am I mad?

What is you data plan like on the phone? What is your 3G/4G coverage like?

Lots what you want to do can be done off line and then sync'd when you get onto a home wifi.

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/numbers/id361304891?mt=8 is just like Excel and syncs with iCloud
(and Pages and Keynote) were free a few months ago but does not look the case now.
3G is quite good I think.

Can you use excel on iPad? My work laptop is windows, I will want to manipulate my data on it.

My data package is good I think, it's a business package through my employer.

If data plan is unlimited and good coverage then you could have a go with this ;)

Used to supply a client server solution and had a few people using it. Basically in your scenario you would take over your laptop in the office from your ipad in the field.

ok, been getting a feel for the iPhone - honestly? I really don't like it.

Reasons? screen too small, buttons on the screen too small (have increased the sizes where possible), touch sensitivity not great.
In general, I really don't like having to do things the Apple way after spending my whole working life with Microsoft (not Apples fault I know!).

I'm not a big fan of Apps, if I want to get info, I prefer to open up the Laptop and look at the internet on a big screen. I hate gimmicks and mainly want the phone for calls, email and a bit of surfing (looking at this forum and the weather!).

Glad I kept the Lumia 820 - it'll be back in action come Monday I think....

Back to the drawing board for my in cab record keeping I think;

As @FarmGeek correctly pointed out, a lot of what I require can be done offline and later sync'd with the laptop.

In an ideal world, what I would like is - a tablet in the tractor which will do the following;

In order of importance;

1. Display Excel allowing me to copy, paste and input data manually
2. Connect via Bluetooth with my phone in the cab, therefore displaying emails on Outlook Express
3. Have a dial pad via which I can answer calls
