Pick up hitch lift rods bending

Mf 6714s was power harrowing, went to drop Harrow off and couldn't lower, then noticed lift rod inner bent. Phoned dealer who reckoned sh!t/mud trapped in rod, had a look and clean as a whistle, anyone else had same experience and would it be ok to heat up and straighten or would it weaken rod

If they’re like the smaller jD lift arm rods then squirt them with diiesel. It stops the rods from binding in the tubes but doesn’t get dust cling to them either. Oil and grease are no use in this case. I normally do them about once a month and have had no issues in the last 20 years after changing them under warranty in the first year for the same reason you have.

i would say they are set a tad to short and the inner is being jammed up into the top of the outer it should be set so there is still a we bit of play when the catch is clear

We have had a few in the past case maxxums loves to do it also. I never oil or grease them or leave them outside for that matter. You want them dry and shiney. If you must oil use wd40. Thicker oil mixes with dust and turns makes them stick

They will straighten cold in a press.

At the bottom of the outer tube there could be a drain hole, check that's clear and then as said above....use thin lube/ solution that will flush but not allow dirt,,/ dust to stick .

Think it was Renault that had rods that the top came off and lived on a keeper at the side, possibly a dromone thing as they wouldn’t have had pick up hitches in frogland.

I had a bennet one drop.off once, (circlips were poor)while I was ploughing, never found him since.

Yes Claas used to love bending rods for fun the dealer drilled the holes out in the top of the box section to give them more slack which helped but still did the odd one usually on the combi drill

Common problem with MF’s.
Power harrow is the worst as all that dust sticks to the grease then stops rods from sliding properly.
Best solution is either don’t grease them at all or remove them when power harrowing.

First time it happened to me took bent one into dealer & showed workshop foreman.
He then took me too the corner of the workshop & pointed to a pile of 7 or 8 similarly bent ones on the floor:rolleyes:

We had this and couldn’t cure it, in the end we just knocked out the roll pins and replaced them with lynch pins, then removed them whenever we were powerharrowing.

Trailer drawbar weights are getting so big now that perhaps the standard PUH’s aren’t really man enough. The new ball and spoon couplers are the way to go - I guess most heavy grain trailers have these now????

I think if they get really worn they can start to run out of true which in turn causes metal on metal to almost pick up (no pun) and then a jam occurs.

The problem with the reno/claas/ massey is that the top lift arm has more travel than the telescopic part allows . this means it needs the rocking top link part and it's this that does the bending damage to the rods when they get a bit sticky.. All in all just a rubbish design that works in the factory but not in real life. The older fastracs were the same problem as are older fendts. The new fastrac has no rockers and more travel in the box section so is much better but they stupidly offset the bottom pivot a little which will encourage the rods to bend if they stick, so not perfect..
