Pick up mpg

I hadnt been doing any towing with the pick up this last few months so when i had the trailer on i filled the pick up up and 220 miles later it needed a drink again. it was doing about 18mpg. 16ft trailer on with a machine about a 1t weight on it. Is this ok mpg or bad. begining to ponder a change of vehicle.

I would say that's not great. Our 1.9 isuzu is between 25-30mpg when not towing, sometimes over 30 if you drive it like the vicar and in no hurry.
And when towing a 14' ifor loaded with 50 lambs it's down to about 20 mpg on the dash.

My Navara averages high 40's when I want it to, trailer will knock 10mpg off it and I can get it to average 15mpg if I drive like a dick.
Best I had out of it was 60.6mpg average on a 15 mile journey using cruise control a lot.

Guess it depends how you`ve been driving and what sort of roads (hilly, or stop start traffic for example )
It`ll no doubt be cheaper to bung a bit more diesel in when you`re doing an occasional towing job rather than the expense of changing a vehicle - unless you`re fancying a change anyway.
What sort of mpg do you get when not towing ?
Engines do drink when they`re working - a tractor drinks a lot more ribena when on full pto speed I`ve noticed....

My old LWB 2016 shogun drank a tank of fuel in just over 2 hours…….. that was pulling a drill on tri axle trailer ( 3.1 tones )

thats about the run of it tbh, ignore anyone who says they average more than 30 (maybe 35 for a newish one) out of a pickup. driving at a steady 55mph on the A1M empty is not average mpg either. dash mpgs are also not much to go by as they dont account for the speedo/odo being inaccurate. usually knock off 5-10% for the true mpg.

edit: i get a true average of 23mpg from the 2 main vehicles (mainly local driving) , subtract 2mpg per ton towing. pickups, ive tried them all and none of them are much better.

My navarra will do mid 30s empty, pulling a full load of cattle about 25 and about the same on the way back empty
navara was the best on fuel of the ones ive tried, still sub 30 true mpg, though it was claiming much more on the dash. having had a patrol, its a shame nissan still cant sort out the quality of any of their other vehicles, including the navara.

My 3litre Hilux does about 24-25mpg running about local and between our farms, journeys from 1mile, to maybe 7 miles maybe coax 30mpg on a long run if driven gently.
12ft flat trailer lightly loaded on and its down to 20mpg
14ft triaxle cattle trailer on and its cruel, 15mpg, seen it down to 4mpg on the dash pulling uphill full loaded, she was holding near 60 at the time though. :D :D :D

Sounds strange but the 26t plant lorry seems easier ran when lightly loaded. The lorry is a lot easier sat in as well. Another reason of thinking about a change

sounds like you want a new truck and are trying to justify it 🤣 fair enough, but i wouldnt change just because of mpg. doing the same work they will all use broadly the same, none of them can magic up more energy from the same fuel.

The ford Ranger 3.2 auto I’ve had for 3 years has a lifetime MPG of just over 21.

it’s hilly round here and it tows a lot though.

on its own and driven sensibly it will do over 30mpg. Loaded cattle box up a steep hill and it’s in single digit figures.

2.5 dmax av 22mpg, mixture of short journeys , shepherding and towing and general abuse. Rarely goes for more than half hour at a time. Seems to always be regenerating but always been like that and been pretty reliable so far.

This is spot on. There’s always someone who will claim to get 40 or 50mpg on every one of these threads, and I call bullsh*t. I’ve had several different trucks from defenders, 2 L200s, a D Max, Amarok and Hilux. None of them did over 30mpg except on very long motorway runs at between 60-70mph. Normal driving, always somewhere around 25mpg. Less when towing.

My Navara records it and keeps it so if you want me to prove it I can, had it for 12 months and it says the overall average for that period has been 38.6 mpg. knock 10% off and it is still circa 35mpg total average for 12 months driving which includes towing 14' triaxle.
