Pick up mpg

I always think there is a big variation in towing, a flatbed on a motorway is a different beast to a loaded stock trailer a
with 50 lambs on board winding it’s way out of a field then up mountain and down dale to an auction on the fringe of an upland area.

My Navara records it and keeps it so if you want me to prove it I can, had it for 12 months and it says the overall average for that period has been 38.6 mpg. knock 10% off and it is still circa 35mpg total average for 12 months driving which includes towing 14' triaxle.

I regularly get mid 30’s and I don’t hang about. I did once see high 40’s on a run, but I was trying to squeeze everything out of it at the time and was driving like a grandmother on the way to Sunday service. I have found the “dream o meter” on navara to be reasonably accurate when I tested it pump to pump.

It will be accurate pump to pump, as it uses the same odo that you do. You likely covered around 10% less miles than the odo claimed. GPS Speedo is a good way to check, compare the GPS Speed to the dash speed.

2007 single cab Ford Ranger tipper. driven sensibly 27-30 mpg. 14 foot livestock trailer fully loaded and pushing on, 17-18 mpg. Incidentally those are exactly the same mpg I used to get from a 4 litre turbo'd Landcruiser pick up. It's just physics; effort required to pull a weight at a given speed, you cannot change the rules.

Hilux Mk7 2.5l,
24.1 average atm, mainly short runs about locally and towing 12ft stock trailer
Reset the trip one day last summer and took a trip up to Lincolnshire and averaged 34mpg, funnily enough it was 37mpg when we got there!

Discovery 5 Commercial 30+ mpg until you put a trailer on it when it appears to “default”? to 15mpg regardless whether it’s a small weightless trailer or 3t+ overweight. I’m guessing it’s a software thing?

All of you seem to be getting good mileag. I assume its diesel motor. Ashamed to say it incase a tree hugger reads it but my 5 litre petrol pickup will average around 18mpg. This is considered a smaller motor by pickup standards. Would like a diesel but cold starts in winter are more problematic. very Flat driving mainly unless I see the nearest hill which is 70 miles away.

My 2011 ford ranger 2.5 tdci did 30 mpg going down to Bedfordshire, with a 12ft ifor flatbed, stuck to 60-70mph, but had the air con flat out. Tyres are a mix of cheap road tyres on the front and cheap Chinese all terrain on the back.

Nissan Navara D40 with taller tyres than standard, so the speedo reads very near GPS speeds.
28-30 mpg empty, maybe a bit more for long motorway runs.
18-20 mpg when towing fairly heavy stuff.
