Why when car engines are getting smaller my little A200 gives me 150 BH from a 2 L D , is there and need to go V6 or even V10 unless you are doing a lot of heavy towing , seems an awfull waste of expesive fuel, ?

Pickup engines are also on the downsizing trend, many are 2.0 and below. However torque characteristics and duty cycles of some engines suit certain types of pickup.

There is little comparison to our European style pickup to that of say the Ford F-350.

The Americans have a saying "you can't beat cube" and I guess that still holds true certainly with LGVs that have huge engines that are hardly used

A better question might be, if you don't regularly tow big weights on the road, do you even need a pick up truck?

Lets say you have a load of heavy items to move by hand, and you have two employees to do it. One can just about lift the items, and the other is a man mountain who can pick them up easily. You set them to work. Which one will run out of puff (or strain a muscle) first?

Give me a big engine working within its capabilities over a small one working at the very limit every time.

I thought the saying was “There’s no replacement for displacement” ?

That’s why I have a 4.6L v8 ?

My XC90 is a two litre four cylinder of 250hp and goes like the clappers when asked, even from idle. So no, there's no real need for those big engines in US pickups unless they have Super Duty trucks that can tow seven tons or so legally.
A 200hp 7.5 ton truck is nice and powerful and are mostly four cylinder engines these days.

Ford Ranger trucks are now only offered with one of several tunes of a two litre Diesel engine.

Well, I wouldn't like to carry a dead sheep, a ton tote bag or a big bale of straw or silage in the back of an estate car or SUV. Getting them in and out is an issue. Wouldn't like a 200l drum inside the car with me either, even if the hatch opening was deep enough to get it inside.

Talking of trucks, one of my rear springs broke last night. Having a new one fitted just after lunch today. Got cattle to move later on.

I suspect he was referring to those who use a pick up as a car .

Well you were the one showing the Doblo pickup or whatever it was

I have a Landrover which I use for all my big trailers but I also have a series of super lighter trailers I use constantly behind an estate car (Octavia) and my quad bike

We pay punitive taxes on fuel/road tax etc to punish those people who like big, fast, over powered, inefficient vehicles. If the government does not utilise those funds for sorting the issues the taxes are leveraged against it isn't our problem. That is the long and short of it.
Further more we live in a world with freedom of choice. If you want car X over car Y that is your choice. If the goverbent decides what car you drive then they can decide what you wear, work, eat and you become a worker ant rather than a person.

I have a navara with the 2.5d and a defender with a 5.9 Cummins. I know which one is better at towing. It’s not the navara. And it turns 30+ mpg as it’s not really doing much work. For regular towing you won’t beat a larger engine. The small engines producing lots of hp will suffer failure sooner than an Under stressed engine. Buy the right vehicle for the job.

Not sure what your point is? A pickup is totally different to your little Nissan/based small family hatch. Can your car carry a ton? No. Can it tow 3.5 tons? No. Has it an open tray back so that a handler can load a bale or a tote bag into the back? No. Does it have sufficient room to carry a 14ft gate tied to the ladder rack? No.

Apples and oranges.

Again, Apples/oranges. If you don't need the 4wd or the towing capacity, the Fiat is a fantastic pickup. They did offer the L200 copy for people who do. Unfortunately they went at it half-arsed and they have now withdrawn the Mitsubishi-based Fullback from sale.

What's so difficult about the concept of horses for courses? I certainly wouldn't have a pickup unless I really needed one.

But, you can claim the vat and various tax reliefs for your pickup and you can't for a car so for most folks on a budget the do it all pickup wins out. Legislation makes the pickup the choice of the farmer/builder who also needs a second vehicle for everyday family life when the option of buying two runarounds plus a seldom used utility vehicle is out of reach for two driver families.

Not difficult but you must admit plenty do
