Pickup trucks & Catch Cans

My DMax with 60k miles on the clock is showing signs of oil around the inlet pipe and intercooler. I dread to think what it looks like on the inside.

So this got me looking at blanking the EGR vavle etc,. However I'm reluctant to do this as it's bound to throw error codes and need somebody with a laptop to tinker with the electronics. All with 12 months warranty left on the truck too.

But something that caught my eye are Catch Cans that filter and condense the fumes/vapours from the engines breather before being circulated for re-combustion. It doesn't take fumes from the EGR valve, just the engine breather which I imagine contain more oil vapour/moisture.

So my question is,. What are people's experiences with Catch Cans? And are the vapours from the crank case a lesser problem than the EGR fumes?

Am I right in thinking Mann Hummel are well regarded in the filtration world? I am looking at their Provent 200 drained away to a tap rather than back into the sump.

This... as in Mursals reply. Forgot to quote.

Common with the Diesel Jeeps... known as the elephant hose mod.

Elephant hose sounds like the cheaper option (y)

The truck is into the dealers this week for a service. Are the signs of crud build up to be expected at 60k miles?

I have read a bit about the EGR blanking plates and you're right, a 13mm hole is required to avoid lights coming on.

I've heard of them being used over on a Mitsubishi Shogun forum, on the Shogun. As it's going for service it may be worth asking them to give the intercooler and connecting pipework a clean out. Will they actually do it is another thing."Clean up around the joints and he'll never know" Depends on your dealer/garage.

Unfortunately due the design of the closed breather set up, oil and soot will be sucked into the intercooler. I personally wonder about buying these vehicles second hand with little or no warranty. I got a reasonably good deal on a new 'old' model Utah and so swapped mine with 6 months warranty left.

If you do any of that and have an engine issue, your warranty is out of the window.
Speak to dealer say you are concerned and want remedial work, is only option till warranty is finished.
