Speaking to several farming friends in France it appears they have had one of the worst ever years wheat (circa 5-6 tons/ha ) and grain maize even lower so where is all of this massive European harvest..? Political "figure massaging" to keep inflation down..
The wheat around here has done well on yield / quality SG of 88 on durum wheat, 85 on milling, due to rain at the beginning of may, but it was followed by very high temperatures by mid may which for young mais barely covering the soil cooked it, especially on stony flint as we have, and after there was no rain until end of august, the good soil irrigated did 12 tonne hectare the stony ground 9 tonne hectare dry of mais,
I harvest the mais for neighbours who have no irrigation and they have only done between 1and 4 tonne hectare,
5- 6 tonnes hectare would be a very good yield in many parts of france, and on durum wheat at 300 euro tonne off the combine, it is ok,

Thanks for posting the photos.
As someone with limited knowledge of beet, a question about the big heap ajacent to a road. Do they dump straight from bunker type harvesters or would there be trailers used? Perhaps it just depends how far the crop is from a hard road.

From the kit being used it would seem growers in France are better treated than the beet farmers of East Anglia?

Cows this morning.
Back in the 70's I had a friend who's dad was a farm manager who always maintained that over the year everything averaged out in farming. (Maybe easier to say as a manager than a farmer?)
Well this year the grass didn't grow very fast to start and the hay crop was small. From May to august was scorching and the grass turned to dust. However we have had bits and bobs of usefull rain but not too much. The grass has grown well since mid august, the ground is still dry, the forecast is good for quite some time, so it looks like the cows can stay out grazing for quite a time to come yet. They are happy and it looks like the hay will last after all:)
