The dynamited bridge [ edit | modify the code ]

Culan Bridge, dynamited in June 1944.
In order to delay the German troops from the south-west who were moving up towards Normandy or who were retreating towards Germany , the Resistance networks blew up road bridges. That of Culan, which allows the RN 143 to span the Arnon in front of the fortress, was dynamited one night in June 1944 . An arch has collapsed, preventing any passage. Upstream of the Arnon, 500 meters as the crow flies, the “Roman” bridge was also blown up. On the other hand, the viaduct, located 200 meters downstream, was not sabotaged, the train line not presenting any strategic interest.

The German troops, arriving from Montluçon , were therefore forced to ford the river, requisitioning horses to pull their equipment. They stayed in Culan for less than 24 hours, without committing other abuses than petty theft of food. A second arch of the bridge was to collapse later. It was rebuilt identically at the end of the war.

Nice and black
He is the first out of my new bull who I bought just before they came over. He needed a little pull, mum was a heifer and had toes sticking out for a couple of hours. I wonder if I should have left her a while. Trouble is I never know what’s for the best. Cant have been wrong thing as they are both dancing round the pen an hour after he popped out. He wants a drink and she wants more licking time.
