Pig farm exposed as Green energy provider - really?

What are your thoughts on this?

Well, I am not exactly impressed by the rats scurrying about, the pigs do look as if they are in pretty squalid dire conditions, but maybe that's just the way the video is filmed. Personally I prefer seeing pigs out in the open with those nice little huts, whatever they're called spaced out in a field. Not keen at all on intensive indoor pig units, but there again I don't know that much about the business...

But the story isn't about the poor conditions, is it? Obviously they're really poor.
It's about the dubious connections assumed, no?

If you mean that the story has the effect of casting a slur on Wyke Farms, Good Energy, anaerobic digestion etc, yes its pretty shoddy, and an example of how some journalists turn a story into, essentially, propaganda. Just the kind of thing the Daily Mail would jump on as well. Any chance to have a good at bioenergy, AD or green energy in general and they seem to take it...so this is like gold dust to them.

I have contacts in both Good Energy and the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) so I think I'll try and get some feedback off them to try and counter the effect of this DM story.

Well, imo, there are plenty of regulations and bodies policing farming, it's not up to someone using a waste product, it's a bit like expecting someone who's recycling nylon/plastics to ensure none of the old garments/products were originally manufactured in sweat shops and that the original oil was ethically sourced. Oil in itself opens up an analogous can of worms, doesn't it?

Hi guys, I have contacts in both Good Energy and the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) so I think I'll try and get some feedback off them to try and counter the effect of this DM story - which appears to, either intentionally or unintentionally, cast a slur on Wyke Farms, Good Energy and the anaerobic digestion sector. I write for Renewable Energy Magazine so with a bit of luck I might be able to write something that helps to counter this. Anyone who wants to comment (and be quoted), please email me on: [email protected]. Cheers guys.

To be fair, your thread title is somewhat misleading. It isn't Wyke Farm's pig unit- the slurry from the farm goes to Green Energy which in turn is used by Wyke Farms. I'm sure they used it in good faith.

And yes, the farm looks a sh*t hole (n)

Yep good point. I'll close this thread down.
