I'm looking to start pig farming and l don't have much and was thinking to start with the outdoor and use arks whilst l raise funds to build structures. Any advice on this before l embark on the project?

Zimbabwe.

Crack on (y) . We have a Zimbabwe family work on our farm (UK) and they tell me that the opportunities for the small farmer/ new entrant are so much greater with you.

So yes arks would seem a sensible low cost start. Are there any pig disease risks in your part of the world ? That could be a downside to outdoor production ? Can you contain them with electric fencing ? Our guys were saying you have a jackal that can be a pest ?

Yeah, the opportunities for small scale farmers are great around here.

The risks of termites or ticks are a big possibility. Jackals, not around here. So l'm thinking of building a structure and expanding it slowly from there. Do you have feeding manuals or routines you use that can act as a guide?

You could try something like this as a compromise between arks and a proper building. Means you would have them in an enclosed environment if biosecurity is an issue. Was £1200, but if needing to do it for less are you able to get hold of the curtain sides from lorries ? They would make a good heavy duty cover over whatever frame you are able to construct.

Can't help on the feed rations, you need the pros on here to assist with that. Starting point will be what feeds can you get hold of ?

Thank you for the arks. I will have to check what's up around here.

For the feed l was to decide between using concentrate with maize or the prepared feeds.

If you have the land I would stick with arks permanently, the high cost of building piggeries and their maintenance is barely worth it, the meat taste better when raised outside too imo, plus the pigs are happier. Don't know what its like in Zimbabwe but in the UK and elsewhere such meat can command a premium.
