Pigeon rope banger tube design

Has anyone got a good design of pigeon rope banger tubes? There was a company that made something called a Boom Tube. These looked like quite a good design, but we thought they were rather expensive for what they were.

Made one last year out of a damaged grain pedestal. Cap on the top with a hook through to hang rope, and bolted to a fence post to knock in ground. Not pretty but worked well.

These homemade versions, are folks letting the banger drop out of the bottom then explode on the ground? Or like the boom tube seems to have, a sort of grill on the bottom which I presume keeps the banger off the ground and means the sound travels up the tube to amplify it?
I made one out of an old oil drum, worked well with a good sound but the bangers eventually just blew holes in the bottom of the drum.

Looking really for a detailed design. We played around with different numbers and sizes of holes up the side. Too small and the ropes blew up the tube or went out and too large and they got wet and went out.

I use an old kongskild blower pipe. No holes in the side, piece of wood with a nail knocked through for the lid. Bend bottom of nail into a hook to hang banger on it. Piece of angle iron bolted to the side about 3 foot longer than the tube to be pushed into the ground. Leaves the bottom of the tube about 1 foot of the ground.

We cut holes in an old oil drum and put some legs on it and then fitted a hook in the middle of the top and then hung the banger ropes in the middle of the oil drum. It works well even when raining. To make a bigger bang can get the old metal lid and lay it underneath and let the bangers drop on it.

word of warning. these things are bloody dangerous. used a piece of 6" plastic gutter once screwed to a post thinking the banger would drop out the bottom. not sure what happened, guess fuse on banger ignitied before it dropped off the rope and the tube exploded like a pipe bomb.

How did you get on without the holes in the side? Do the banger go out without a bit of airflow? I notice the Boom Tube design had holes in the side which I assumed was for a reason.

We also used some plastic tubing and the same thing happened. With metal tubing it seems OK.

Has anyone bought one of the official Boom Tubes? If so, do they work well?
Brought 2 which we’ve had a couple of seasons. First thing we did was paint them dull army green to make less obvious in field. First year no problems using magnum bangers. Last year had boxes of day bangers? orange in colour, they would often go out whether down to the double bangers on the rope don’t know. Tubes give a loud bang, keep rope dry and out of wind and don’t let the banger fall into a puddle of water.

Thanks. Very helpful. Would you change anything about the design having used them?
